Angiographic Baseline Proximal Thrombus Appearance of M1/M2 Occlusions in Mechanical Thrombectomy
ConclusionBaseline cut off thrombus appearance predicts a  higher number of thrombectomy maneuvers. In day to day practice this may prepare the neurointerventionalist for a more challenging endovascular procedure ahead. Stroke etiology, clinical outcomes and thrombus-specific characteristics did not show any associations with the thrombus appearance.

Novel Echocardiographic Biomarkers in the Management of Atrial Fibrillation
AbstractPurpose of ReviewAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in adults. The number of patients with AF is anticipated to increase annually, mainly due to the aging population alongside improved arrhythmia detection. AF is associated with a significantly elevated risk of hospitalization, stroke, thromboembolism, heart failure, and all-cause mortality. Echocardiography is one of the key components of routine assessment and management of AF. Therefore, the aim of this review is to briefly summarize current knowledge on “novel” echocardiographic parameters that may be of value in the management of AF pat...

Dual energy CT in the management of antiplatelet therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke for carotid obstruction.
CONCLUSIONS: DE-CT may contribute to select antiplatelet regimen after acute carotid stenting in tandem occlusions. PMID: 31684785 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Primary diagnosis of pulmonary embolism with unenhanced MRI for patients not eligible for CTPA: Clinical outcome
ConclusionsOur method supported or altered clinical decision-making and treatment in this cohort. A diagnostic tool for PE without intravenous contrast agent or radiation is of great benefit for certain patients.

Treatment of posterior circulation strokes by mechanical thrombectomy with a stent-retriever: a retrospective observational study at a single center.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with posterior circulation infarcts, treatment with stent-retrievers achieved high rates of recanalization and functional independence at 90 days. The rate of complications was similar to those reported in other studies. GCS is an independent predictor of functional independence at 90 days. PMID: 31445762 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Screening mammography beyond breast cancer: breast arterial calcifications as a sex-specific biomarker of cardiovascular risk
ConclusionsThere is a strong rationale for mammography to become a dual test for breast cancer screening and CV disease prevention. However, robust and automated quantification methods are needed for a deeper insight on the association between BAC and CV disease, to stratifying CV risk and define personalized preventive actions.Graphical abstract

Technical note on endovascular treatment of concomitant carotid occlusion in large vessel occlusion stroke: The "single-cross" technique.
CONCLUSIONS: The single-cross technique appears to be a safe and effective option for treating tandem occlusive lesions in the setting of ELVO. PMID: 31311374 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis: What radiologist and clinician must know?
ConclusionsThe SOVT can be secondary to different mechanisms. The SOVT secondary to trauma, recent surgery and coagulopathy are mostly non-aggressive, and can be managed by conservative therapy and anticoagulation. The SOVT in patients with orbital cellulitis, history of active sinusitis or paranasal sinus surgery are aggressive presenting with acute orbital swelling, abscess and visual loss. This type of SOVT can be complicated by extension to the cavernous sinus and intracranial structures. These patients require urgent antibiotics therapy and sinus surgery. The most severe type of SOVT is caused by mucormycosis which ma...

Using CT left atrial appendage imaging to identify patients at higher risk of stroke
More than the last 5 –10 years, the left atrial appendage (LAA) has become an increasingly important anatomic site for cardiologists, especially in the prevention and management of stroke.1 Once felt to be a relatively benign entity, its role as a nidus for thrombus (especially in those with atrial fibrillation (AF)) has long been recognised, but with the advent of LAA exclusion devices, which may be internal (such as Watchman, Wavecrest and Amplatz devices), or external (such as the Lariat laso or Atriclip), the need to accurately assess the morphology of left atrial appendage has become increasingly important, both in ...

Flow Patterns in Carotid Webs: A Patient-Based Computational Fluid Dynamics Study EXTRACRANIAL VASCULAR
CONCLUSIONS: Carotid webs are associated with increased recirculation zones and regional increased wall shear stress metrics that are associated with disturbed flow. These findings suggest that a carotid web might stimulate thrombus formation, which increases the risk of acute ischemic stroke.

Predictors and Clinical Impact of Delayed Stent Thrombosis after Thrombectomy for Acute Stroke with Tandem Lesions INTERVENTIONAL
CONCLUSIONS: We observed a non-negligible rate of delayed stent thrombosis with significant negative impact on clinical outcome. Future studies should systematically measure and report stent patency rates.

Improved detection and characterization of arterial occlusion in acute ischemic stroke using Contrast Enhanced MRA
Conclusions:Our study showed that CEMRA imaging detected arterial occlusions better than TOF MRA in AIS patients and more precisely such that thrombus length and location could be known, which improves the patient’s management and care.

Endovascular recanalization of symptomatic non-acute intracranial artery occlusion: Procedural and mid-term clinical outcomes in the anterior circulation.
CONCLUSIONS: Endovascular revascularization can be a viable option with an acceptable safety profile in selected patients with symptomatic NAICO in the anterior circulation. Further characterization of aborted cases would facilitate proper patient selection for endovascular treatment. PMID: 30813809 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Thrombus perviousness is not associated with first-pass revascularization using stent retrievers.
CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that thrombus imaging characteristics on multiphase CTA cannot predict first-pass recanalization or successful revascularization in acute ischemic stroke patients treated with stent retrievers. Longer clot length was associated with higher risk of distal embolic complications. PMID: 30714501 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Radiomics-Based Intracranial Thrombus Features on CT and CTA Predict Recanalization with Intravenous Alteplase in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke FUNCTIONAL
CONCLUSIONS: Thrombus radiomics features derived from NCCT and CTA are more predictive of recanalization with IV alteplase in patients with acute ischemic stroke with proximal occlusion than previously known thrombus imaging features such as length, volume, and permeability.
