Aortic arch thrombosis complicated by an embolic stroke in a patient with COVID-19: A case report
CONCLUSION: Aortic thrombosis is a devastating condition that can be easily missed without clinical suspicion. Our patient developed acute ischemic stroke, most likely embolic originating from the aortic thrombus. The clinician should consider this condition in any COVID-19 patient presenting with thromboembolic events, such as stroke or acute limb ischemia. Further study is required to explain the pathophysiology of arterial/venous thrombosis in mild-moderate COVID-19 cases.PMID:34457268 | PMC:PMC8381619 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102760

Prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width in predicting 3-month functional outcome of patients undergoing thrombolysis treatment for acute ischemic stroke
This study was performed to determine whether red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with 3-month poor functional outcome in patients undergoing thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke. RDW was measured in patients with thrombolytic therapy in emergency department. Functional outcome was assessed after 3 months and poor functional outcome was defined as modified Rankin scale 3 to 6. A total of 240 patients were enrolled, and 82 (34.2%) had a poor functional outcome. The median RDW was significantly elevated in patients with a poor functional outcome compare with those with a good outcome. RDW ...

An Exceptional Clinical Presentation associating an occipital stroke, a Superior and Inferior Mesenteric Thrombosis following Covid 19 disease, case report
CONCLUSION: We discuss through this report the recommendations of anticoagulation in Covid 19 patients and the place of early rehabilitation in patients with stroke. We also report a new case among the rare cases described in the literature that associates several thrombo-embolic manifestations secondary to Covid 19, in particular the neurological and digestive association.PMID:34868574 | PMC:PMC8632876 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.103082

Endovascular Coil Embolization for Recurrent Bow Hunter's Stroke
Intern Med. 2022 May 14. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.8906-21. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBow hunter's stroke is a rare cause of vertebrobasilar infarction. There is no consensus regarding the optimal treatment. We herein report a case of bow hunter's stroke successfully treated by endovascular treatment. A 70-year-old man presented with central vertigo. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed posterior circulation infarcts. Dynamic angiography revealed thrombus formation and hypoperfusion of the right vertebral artery upon head rotation to the left. Endovascular parent artery occlusion of the right vertebral artery wa...

Evaluation of a multicomponent intervention to shorten thrombolytic door-to-needle time in stroke patients in China (MISSION): A cluster-randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsThe teleconference-delivered PEITEM intervention resulted in a moderate but clinically relevant shorter DNT and better functional outcome in AIS patients receiving IVT. Trial registrationClinicaltrials.gov NCT03317639.

Lateral medullary syndrome: uncommon form of brainstem stroke
CONCLUSION: LMS is a rare form of brainstem stroke and carries a favorable prognosis if early hospitalization and treatment is applied. Brain MRI, including diffusion sequence, is the most useful diagnostic tool for detecting LMS.PMID:36923779 | PMC:PMC10010825 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000000260

The risk of arterial thrombosis increases with the use of combined oral contraceptives
Commentary on: Roach RE, Helmerhorst FM, Lijfering WM, et al.. Combined oral contraceptives: the risk of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2015;8:CD011054. Context While the risk of venous thrombosis with use of combined oral contraceptives (COC) is now convincingly quantified to be threefold to sixfold increased, depending mainly on the type of progestogen, there are few and less consistent studies on the risk of arterial endpoints. Therefore, a meta-analysis on available evidence might be relevant. Method This Cochrane review includes data from 24 studies assessing the risk of thrombot...
