The impact of cerebrovascular disease in Panama
ConclusionSince 2013, both hospitals' intravenous thrombolytic therapy program has been successfully applied as public health policy. A successful campaign on healthy lifestyle must be strengthened through a comprehensive approach with other public sectors in order to have an impact on the population, particularly in children and adolescents.

Contemporary Trends In The Ischemic Stroke "Weekend Effect" On Iv Thrombolytic Use, In-hospital Mortality, Discharge Disposition, Hospital Charges, And Length Of Stay (P6.242)
Conclusion: Admission on a weekend is a predictor of higher utilization of IVT and discharge to a long-term facility , but there was no difference in in-hospital mortality or cost.Disclosure: Dr. Jani has nothing to disclose. E-095 The embotrap stent retriever for treatment of acute ischemic stroke: Impact of hospital procedural volume on real world outcomes
ConclusionsHospital MT volume significantly influenced the rate of readmissions among AIS patients treated with the EmboTrap® (alone or with another MT device) device. The lack of difference in mortality may also be reflective of limited statistical power to detect differences in study groups. Further research to understand the impact of hospital MT volume on patient outcomes, as well as identify the threshold volume that optimizes positive outcomes, could help inform future stroke care guidelines and contribute to improved treatment protocols in low-volume centers.Disclosures S. Predictors and Prognoses of Hospitalization for Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis in the United States (P1.243)
Conclusions: One of every 67 stroke patients hospitalized in the US is diagnosed with CSVT. These CVST patients are more likely to be young, female, and white. Compared to other stroke patients, CVST patients have better clinical outcomes, but incur higher hospital charges.Disclosure: Dr. Banerjee has nothing to disclose. Beyond the embolus: “do not miss” diffusion abnormalities of ischaemic and non-ischaemic neurological disease
AbstractGiven the rapid evolution and technological advances in the diagnosis and treatment of acute ischaemic stroke (AIS), including the proliferation of comprehensive stroke centres and increasing emphasis on interventional stroke therapies, the need for prompt recognition of stroke due to acute large vessel occlusion has received significant attention in the recent literature. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of acute ischaemic stroke, as images appear positive within minutes of ischaemic injury, and a high signal-to-noise ratio enables even punctate infarcts to be readily detecte...

A prospective study investigating the causes of warfarin under-utilization in Chinese patients
Conclusion Patients with CHA2DS2-VASc scores ≥1 who were admitted with NVAF were under prescribed warfarin, and 138 patients were not treated with either warfarin or other antithrombotic therapies. In conclusion, a more aggressive approach for stroke prevention in NVAF patients is required.

Neurovascular Manifestations of Iron-Deficient Anemia: Narrative Review and Practical Reflections through a Teaching Case
Conclusions: IDA is a common but treatable condition that, independently or synergically, may increase the risk of thrombotic events. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach has not yet been defined, and each case should be individually addressed in a pragmatic clinical road map.PMID:36294407 | DOI:10.3390/jcm11206088

Anticoagulant choice in antiphospholipid syndrome – associated thrombosis
Background: DOACs have largely replaced VKAs as first-line therapy for venous thromboembolism in patients with adequate renal function. However, there is concern in APS that DOACs may have higher rates of recurrent thrombosis than VKAs when treating thromboembolism. Dr. David Portnoy Study design: Randomized noninferiority trial. Setting: Six teaching hospitals in Spain. Synopsis: Of adults with thrombotic APS, 190 were randomized to receive rivaroxaban or warfarin. Primary outcomes were thrombotic events and major bleeding. Follow-up after 3 years demonstrated new thromboses in 11 patients (11.6%) in the DOAC...

Adverse events are not increased with trainee participation in transcarotid revascularization
CONCLUSION: Vascular surgery trainee's involvement during TCAR did not increase adverse outcomes, such as stroke and death, in the perioperative period. The results presented herein should encourage other teaching institutions to provide surgical trainees with supervised, hands-on experience during TCAR.PMID:36377465 | DOI:10.1177/17085381221140158

Increased platelet activation in early symptomatic vs. asymptomatic carotid stenosis and relationship with microembolic status: results from the Platelets and Carotid Stenosis Study
DiscussionRecently, symptomatic carotid stenosis patients have had higher platelet counts (potentially reflecting increased platelet production, mobilization or reduced clearance) and platelet activation status than asymptomatic patients. MES were more frequently detected in early symptomatic than asymptomatic patients, but the differences between late symptomatic and asymptomatic groups were not significant. Increased lymphocyte‐platelet complex formation in recently symptomatic vs. asymptomatic MES‐negative patients indicates enhanced platelet activation in this early symptomatic subgroup. Platelet biomarkers, in com...

Influence of gender on the risk of death and adverse events in patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing pharmacoinvasive strategy
Abstract Pharmacoinvasive treatment is an acceptable alternative for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in developing countries. The present study evaluated the influence of gender on the risks of death and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in this population. Seven municipal emergency rooms and the Emergency Mobile Healthcare Service in São Paulo treated STEMI patients with tenecteplase. The patients were subsequently transferred to a tertiary teaching hospital for early (<24 h) coronary angiography. A total of 469 patients were evaluated [329 men (70.1 %)]. Compared ...

Teaching NeuroImages: Magnetic resonance susceptibility effect for acute isolated cortical vein thrombosis
A 38-year-old woman using hormonal contraception presented with right-sided abdominal and arm clonic seizures, right hemiparesis, hypesthesia, and nausea. She denied headache. D-dimers were 350 ng/mL (laboratory reference ≤500 ng/mL). CT showed a small left parietal hemorrhagic infarct with adjacent hyperdense cortical vein (figure 1). MRI 15 hours after onset showed magnetic susceptibility effect on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI, figure 2). Isolated cortical vein thrombosis is present in 5% of patients with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT).1 Negative D-dimer and absence of headache does not exclude CVT1 and SWI ...
