Transient ischemic attack as an unusual initial manifestation of acute promyelocytic leukemia.
Abstract Patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) are prone to both bleeding and thrombosis. Both of these have a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of patients with this disease. Here we report a case of a 41-year-old male, who presented with transient ischemic attack (TIA) and early neurological deterioration (END) as initial manifestations prior to an ultimate diagnosis of APL. Abstract 5267: Comorbidity and cause of death in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
Conclusions. Despite the advanced age at CLL diagnosis, the frequent presence of comorbidities, and the indolent nature of the disease, CLL progression is the ultimate cause of death in 51% of newly diagnosed CLL patients, with an additional 26% dying of causes potentially related to CLL, such as infections and second cancers. Methotrexate Encephalopathy as a Cause of Alternating Hemiplegia (P3.143)
CONCLUSIONS: Transient neurologic dysfunction with reversible MRI abnormality is a recognized consequence of intrathecal methotrexate chemotherapy in childhood ALL. Patients present with dramatic fluctuating neurologic symptoms with associated MRI changes and may be mistaken for stroke or a seizure disorder. Venous thromboembolism in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Abstract Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs in 0.95–36 % of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia almost exclusively during chemotherapy. It is most commonly associated with concurrent l-asparaginase and steroid therapy, central venous line use, and inherited thrombophilia. Clinical manifestations regarding the location of VTE include central nervous system thrombosis (sinus venous thrombosis, cerebral infarct/stroke), upper-/lower-limb deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and right atrial/intracardiac and superficial venous thrombosis and can be both symptomatic and asymptomatic. Methotrexate induced leucoencephalopathy: A stroke mimic
We describe the case of a 17 year old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who developed stroke like episodes on two consecutive challenges with a chemotherapeutic regime which included intravenous and intrathecal methotrexate. She had MRI changes consistent with acute ischemic stroke on both occasions. Her deficits recovered completely and spontaneously, as did the MRI changes. She did not have any further episodes when methotrexate was excluded from the chemotherapeutic regime.
