Prevalence of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale in a cohort of sudden cardiac death patients undergoing autopsy
CONCLUSIONS: The combined rate of PFO and ASD in a cohort of 517 patients undergoing autopsy was 7.9 %. None of these patients had experienced a cerebrovascular accident. This rate of PFOs appears lower than earlier reports and raises the possibility that the relative risk of an associated stroke could be higher than previously estimated.PMID:37734655 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.09.006

Dual potential embolic source detected in left atrium during hyperacute stroke
Clinical introduction A woman in her late 60s with a medical history of hypertension presented to the emergency department with symptoms of a stroke which began 40 min prior. Brain MRI was performed (figure 1A). Hyperacute CT angiography of the head and neck did not find any atherosclerosis. ECG is shown (figure 1B), and subsequent transthoracic echocardiography showed left atrium enlargement and left-to-right flow at the region of the fossa ovalis (figure 1C). Long-term risk of recurrent cerebrovascular events after patent foramen ovale closure: Results from a real-world stroke cohort
CONCLUSION: In this long-term follow-up-study of patients with a cerebral ischaemic event who had received PFO-closure with different devices, rates of recurrent stroke/TIA were low and largely related to large artery atherosclerosis and small vessel disease. Thorough vascular risk factor control seems crucial for secondary stroke prevention in patients treated for PFO-related stroke.PMID:37658692 | DOI:10.1177/23969873231197564
