Is Patent Foramen Ovale a Risk Factor for Perioperative Stroke?
Perioperative stroke is one of the most feared complications of any surgery or invasive medical procedure. Perioperative stroke occurs in less than 1% of patients undergoing general surgery, but the risk is several fold higher with cardiac surgery, carotid revascularization, other cerebrovascular procedures, and thoracic aortic repair. Given the volume of these interventions, perioperative and periprocedural stroke likely account for at least 5% of the approximately 800  000 strokes that occur each year in the United States, yet stroke in this setting remains understudied.

Gore wins expanded indications for Cardioform septal occluder

Gore & Associates said today it won expanded FDA indications for its Cardioform septal occluder, now cleared for the closure of patent foramen ovale to reduce the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke in certain patients. Carotid Artery Free-Floating Thrombus Caused by Paradoxical Embolization From Greater Saphenous Vein Ascending Thrombophlebitis
We report a case of a young woman without cardiovascular risk factors who was admitted to our emergency department with listlessness and altered mental status. The clinical examination revealed right lower limb swelling. ConclusionsThe protective effect of PFO repair remains unclear. However, is not associated with an increased incidence of stroke or postoperative mortality following LTx. Conclusion: Innominate artery cannulation can be performed safely and poses a low risk of neurologic events in procedures requiring hypothermic circulatory arrest. This artery may be considered the optimal perfusion site for delivering ACP.

Innominate artery cannulation for proximal aortic surgery: outcomes and neurological events in 263 patients AORTIC SURGERY
CONCLUSIONS Innominate artery cannulation can be performed safely and poses a low risk of neurological events in procedures requiring hypothermic circulatory arrest. The technique for cannulating this artery should be part of the routine armamentarium of cardiac and aortic surgeons, and the innominate artery is among the preferred perfusion sites for delivering ACP.

Prevalence of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale in a cohort of sudden cardiac death patients undergoing autopsy
CONCLUSIONS: The combined rate of PFO and ASD in a cohort of 517 patients undergoing autopsy was 7.9 %. None of these patients had experienced a cerebrovascular accident.
