Autonomic Disturbances in Acute Cerebrovascular Disease
AbstractAutonomic disturbances often occur in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease due to damage of the central autonomic network. We summarize the structures of the central autonomic network and the clinical tests used to evaluate the functions of the autonomic nervous system. We review the clinical and experimental findings as well as management strategies of post-stroke autonomic disturbances including electrocardiographic changes, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial damage, thermoregulatory dysfunction, gastrointestinal dysfunction, urinary incontinence, sexual disorders, and hyperglycemia. The occurrence of autonom...

Factors that influence activities of daily living in the elderly with probable dementia
This study identified five factors influencing ADL that can guide researchers and nurses in developing strategies to improve ADL. AbstractThe purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence activities of daily living (ADL) in the elderly with probable dementia. The participants were 152 older adults who voluntarily visited a hospital to participate in a national dementia free screening programme. General characteristics, health‐related characteristics, ADL, Mini‐Mental State Examination Korean Consortium (MMSE‐KC) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) score were evaluated in this study. The data ...

What characteristics predispose to continence in nursing home residents?: A population‐based cross‐sectional study
ConclusionsAbout 25% of NH residents were continent. Double incontinence and urinary incontinence only were prevalent conditions in NHs, while FI alone was rarer. With the exception of diarrhea as a cause of FI, it appears that FI alone, UI alone, and DI may have common causes and development. Neurourol. Urodynam. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Identifying factors associated with changes in physical functioning in an older population
ConclusionsOlder persons with stroke, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, geriatric conditions and poor short physical performance battery score should be considered as the target of prevention against functional decline. Those not living with spouses, with poor self‐rated health, with low social support, being underweight or obese and with a sedentary lifestyle might also require major attention. Prevalence of urinary incontinence and associated factors in nursing home residents
ConclusionsIt is concluded that UI is a health issue that affects more than half of the institutionalized elderly, and is associated with white race, physical inactivity, stroke, and other geriatric syndromes such as immobility and cognitive disability. Effectiveness and Safety of Electroacupuncture on Poststroke Urinary Incontinence: Study Protocol of a Pilot Multicentered, Randomized, Parallel, Sham-Controlled Trial.
Authors: Shin S, Lee J, Yu A, Yoo J, Lee E Abstract This pilot multicentered, randomized, parallel, sham-controlled trial is intended to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture therapy for poststroke patients with urinary incontinence. Forty stroke survivors aged >19 years will be recruited in 2 hospitals in the Republic of Korea. Patients who experienced stroke within 2 years and satisfy criteria of urinary frequencies ≥2 with either 3 to 4 points on the Patient Perception of Intensity of Urgency Scale or 13 points or more on the Korean version of the International Prostate Symptom Scale (...

Association between comorbidities and female sexual dysfunction: findings from the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3)
ConclusionsComorbidities were associated with FSD and specific comorbidities associated with dysfunction in specific domains. Urogynecologists and urologists must assess for comorbidities, as women presenting with sexual dysfunction may provide an opportunity for early diagnosis of life-threatening conditions.

Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Urinary Incontinence in Home Hospice Patients
Publication date: Available online 25 October 2018Source: European UrologyAuthor(s): Bilal Chughtai, Dominique Thomas, David Russell, Kathryn Bowles, Holly PrigersonAbstractUrinary incontinence (UI) is a debilitating and embarrassing condition that is prevalent among aging males and females. Little is known about UI in the home hospice setting. We sought to determine UI prevalence and risk factors in a cohort of 15 432 home hospice patients over 4 yr. Most of the study patients were female (59%) and aged ≥75 yr. This was a retrospective observational study and no patients were excluded. The median length o...

Lumbar drain trial outcomes of normal pressure hydrocephalus: a single-center experience of 254 patients.
CONCLUSIONSThe LD trial is generally safe and well tolerated. The best predictors of passing the LD trial include a negative history of stroke and having disproportionate subarachnoid spaces. PMID: 30611143 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Efficacy of Biofeedback for Medical Conditions: an Evidence Map
We present our findings in the form of evidence maps.ResultsWe included 16 good-quality systematic reviews examining biofeedback alone or as an adjunctive intervention. We found clear, consistent evidence across a large number of trials that biofeedback can reduce headache pain and can provide benefit as adjunctive therapy to men experiencing urinary incontinence after a prostatectomy. Consistent evidence across fewer trials suggests biofeedback may improve fecal incontinence and stroke recovery. There is insufficient evidence to draw conclusions about effects for most conditions including bruxism, labor pain, and Raynaud ...

Functional dependence among older adults: a cross-sectional study with a rural population of southern Brazil.
CONCLUSION: Older adults in rural areas have a high prevalence of functional dependence. Knowledge of functional dependence and associated factors in rural populations is necessary for the planning and developing actions, especially in the routine of primary care, which promote health and prevent or postpone the decline in functional capacity. Effects of nonsurgical, minimally or noninvasive therapies for urinary incontinence due to neurogenic bladder: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analyses found electrical stimulation to be beneficial for improving the symptoms of UUI among people with multiple sclerosis and those with stroke. Our review also revealed that TTNS and BT might improve QoL for people with NGB due to Parkinson's disease, although the effects of PFMT and BT on UUI warrant further investigation.PMID:35321402 | PMC:PMC8935404 | DOI:10.1177/20406223211063059
