Serum persistent organic pollutants levels and stroke risk.
Abstract Knowledge of environmental risk factors for stroke and their role are limited. We performed a case-cohort study to evaluate the association between serum persistent organic pollutants (POPs) level and stroke risk. 526 subcohort members and 111 stroke incidence cases were identified from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II. Serum levels of POPs were measured using gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry. The hazard ratios (HRs) for stroke (ischemic, hemorrhagic, and all stroke types) were estimated using the weighted Cox regression model. Age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, physical a...

Ethical Challenges in Acute Evaluation of Suspected Psychogenic Stroke Mimics.
We present two cases of patients with suspected psychogenic stroke mimics to illustrate the ethical challenges faced in identifying and managing psychogenic stroke mimics. Further research is needed to demonstrate effective treatment strategies for patients with acute stroke symptoms of psychogenic etiology. PMID: 30226818 [PubMed - in process]

Serum levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and stroke risk among Chinese: a hospital-based case –control study
AbstractPrevious studies have revealed the serious human health risk effects of organic pollutants-polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). However, the roles of circulating PCBs on stroke risk have not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to examine whether serum PCBs could increase the risk for stroke among Chinese participants. A total of 241 patients with stroke and age- (5-year interval) and gender-matched controls were recruited in Tianjin, China. Concentrations of 17 PCB congeners were measured by using high-resolution gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Conditional logistic regression models we...

Associations of long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and its constituents with cardiovascular mortality: A prospective cohort study in China
CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide cohort study demonstrated associations of long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its constituents with increased risks of cardiovascular mortality in the general population of China. Our study highlighted the importance of PM2.5 constituents from fossil fuel combustion in the long-term cardiovascular effects of PM2.5 in China.PMID:35248978 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2022.107156

What Causes Microcephaly?
Discussion Microcephaly is usually defined as an occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) more than 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for sex, age and ethnicity. Severe microcephaly is used for OFC < 3 standard deviations. Rates of microcephaly range from 0.5-12 patients/10,000 live births. The OFC should be measured at every well child visit and at other opportunities and plotted on standard growth charts. The OFC is measured using a nonelastic tape measure around the largest part of the head with the tape measure held above the eyebrows and ears. It is a highly reproducible measurement. There are several diff...

Safety outcomes during pediatric GH therapy: final results from the prospective GeNeSIS observational program.
Conclusions: GeNeSIS data support the favourable safety profile of pediatric GH treatment. Overall risk for death or primary cancer was not elevated in GH-treated children, and no hemorrhagic strokes occurred in patients without risk factors. T2DM incidence was elevated compared to the general population, but most cases had diabetes risk factors. PMID: 30219920 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

State of the art regarding anticoagulant and thrombolytic therapy in dental procedures.
Authors: Lazăr AC, Ilea A, Moldovan B, Ionel A, Pop AS, Păcurar M, Câmpian RS Abstract Patients with anticoagulant therapy have a high thromboembolic risk. Due to the rich oro-maxillofacial vasculature and the fact that some dental procedures may cause a bleeding, the physician should be able to correlate this risk with the hemorrhagic risk. Dental procedures are a trigger for psychic stress. One of the most important changes in acute stress is in cardiovascular system. In healthy patients, these changes are reversible and have no significant consequences, but in patients with cardiovascular diseases, the respon...

P-026 Aqua embolic system: evaluating the performance of a new liquid embolic system using a swine AVM model
ConclusionsAES, which is a DMSO free, non-adhesive polysaccharides based LEM, may be used as an embolic material for the treatment of hemorrhagic stroke caused by cerebrovascular diseases, such as brain AVM.A: common carotid artery injection (AP view) shows left ascending pharyngeal artery (APA) and left rete mirabile (red arrow). B: AES is injected from the microcatheter. The AES reflux is reaching the tip of the microcatheter. C: With continuous injection of AES, the microcotheter tip is embedded ¡n the cost of AES. D. Post treatment angiogram shows complete occlusion of the left rete mirabile and APADisclosures I....

Electrocardiogram alterations in non-traumatic brain injury: a systematic review
AbstractThe presence of abnormal electrocardiograms in individuals without known organic heart disease is one of the most common manifestations of cardiac dysfunction occurring during acute non traumatic brain injury. The primary goal of the present review is to provide an overview of the available data and literature regarding the presence of new-onset electrocardiographic (ECG) alterations in acute non traumatic brain injury. The secondary aim is to identify the incidence of ECG alterations and consider the prognostic significance of new-onset ECG changes in this setting. To do so, English language articles from January ...
