Cardiovascular risk of sitagliptin in ischemic stroke patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease: A nationwide cohort study
Limited data are available about the cardiovascular (CV) safety and efficacy of sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, in ischemic stroke patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Ischemic stroke patients with T2DM and CKD were selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from March 1, 2009 to December 31, 2011. A total of 1375 patients were divided into 2 age- and gender-matched groups: patients who received sitagliptin (n = 275; 20%) and those who did not (n = 1,100). Primary major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (M...

Continuous positive pressure therapy usage and incident stroke in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A nationwide population ‐ based cohort study
ConclusionsIt is possible that treatment with CPAP might be beneficial for protection against stroke, but this conclusion should be interpreted with caution. Future studies with satisfactory CPAP quality and duration are needed to validate this observation.

Prognostic indicators for the onset of ischaemic versus haemorrhagic stroke in stable coronary artery disease
The incidence of stroke may be increased in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to investigate the specific risk factors for the development of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke in stable CAD patients. Patients with stable CAD were prospectively enrolled for future cardiovascular events in Taiwan. All the patients had received coronary interventions and were stable for least 1 month before enrolment. The incidence of ischaemic stroke was identified and confirmed by telephone and hospital records. Baseline characteristics, including demographic data, lipid profiles, medications, and biomarkers for pot...

Monogenic Causes in Familial Stroke Across Intracerebral Hemorrhage and Ischemic Stroke Subtypes Identified by Whole-Exome Sequencing
Cell Mol Neurobiol. 2022 Dec 29. doi: 10.1007/s10571-022-01315-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhole exome sequencing (WES) has been used to detect rare causative variants in neurological diseases. However, the efficacy of WES in genetic diagnosis of clinically heterogeneous familial stroke remains inconclusive. We prospectively searched for disease-causing variants in unrelated probands with defined familial stroke by candidate gene/hotspot screening and/or WES, depending on stroke subtypes and neuroimaging features at a referral center. The clinical significance of each variant was determined according to the American C...

Quality of Life and Psychological Distress of Caregivers' of Stroke People.
CONCLUSIONS: Caregivers of people with stroke experience mental disorders and burden negatively affecting their quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to implement strategies which should aim to the management of these problems for the welfare of both patients and their caregivers. PMID: 30315561 [PubMed - in process]

IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 3472: Exploration of Medical Trajectories of Stroke Patients Based on Group-Based Trajectory Modeling
In this study, we used group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) to study the characteristics of various groups of patients hospitalized with ACVD. In this research, the patient data were derived from the 1 million sampled cases in the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. Cases who had been admitted to hospitals fewer than four times or more than eight times were excluded. Characteristics of the ACVD patients were collected, including age, mortality rate, medical expenditure, and length of hospital stay for each admission. We then performed GBTM to examine hospitalization patterns in patients who had...
