Atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery: to screen or not to screen?
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is diagnosed in 20 –40% of patients in the first week after cardiac surgery and is largely self-limiting, with the majority of patients being discharged from hospital in sinus rhythm (SR). However, that is not the end of it. The rate of subsequent AF development is higher in cardiac surgery patients who experience A F during hospital admission compared to those who do not1; patients with postoperative AF also have a longer hospital stay, a higher long-term risk of stroke (both ischaemic and haemorrhagic) and worse overall prognosis.1 –5

This study is an observational, prospective, multicenter registry encompassing the entire local medical region of Iwate Prefecture (northern area of mainland Japan). Comparison of In-hospital Outcomes of Patients With-vs-Without Ischemic Cardiomyopathy Undergoing Left Ventricular Assist Device Placement
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of heart failure (HF) etiology (ischemic cardiomyopathy (IC) vs. non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NIC)) on in-hospital outcomes in patients undergoing left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. We identified patients who underwent LVAD placement from 2011 to 2014. The primary endpoint was the effect of ICM on in-hospital mortality. Secondary endpoints included peri-procedural vascular complications requiring surgery, post-operative myocardial infarction, stroke and hemorrhage requiring transfusion.
