Association of visceral adiposity index with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis: a population-based study in Shandong, China
CONCLUSIONS: The possible correlation between VAI and aICAS was found to be positive for the first time among Chinese rural residents over 40 years old. A higher VAI was found to be significantly associated with aICAS among the participants who were underweight or normal weight, and these results may provide additional risk stratification information for aICAS.PMID:37198613 | DOI:10.1186/s12944-023-01831-1

Targeted Plasma Proteomics to Predict the Development of Carotid Plaques
CONCLUSIONS: A new set of circulating proteins have been identified that may be considered as markers of preclinical atherosclerosis development. The difference of the protein identified to predict SCA versus IMT progression may reflect different etiological factors.PMID:35775410 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.122.038887

Modern Treatment of Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis —The Importance of Both Medical Therapy and Carotid Endarterectomy
Each year there are approximately 700  000 new ischemic strokes in the US, and 10% to 15% of them are caused by thromboembolism from a previously asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS). Three large randomized clinical trials, published in the 1990s and early 2000s, have demonstrated a significant benefit of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) i n preventing stroke in patients with severe ACS compared with medical therapy alone. They showed a 50% relative risk reduction in 5-year stroke rate and an approximately 1% per year absolute stroke risk reduction. Over the course of the past 2 decades, there has been significant improvement...

Association of Carotid Plaque Morphology and Glycemic and Lipid Parameters in the Northern Manhattan Study
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2022 Jan 24;9:793755. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2022.793755. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTLow Gray-Scale Median (GSM) index is an ultrasonographic parameter of soft, lipid rich plaque morphology that has been associated with stroke and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We sought to explore the contribution of the modifiable and not-modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (RFs) to vulnerable plaque morphology measured by the low GSM index. A total of 1,030 stroke-free community dwelling individuals with carotid plaques present (mean age, 71.8 ± 9.1; 58% women; 56% Hispanic, 20% Non-Hispanic Black, 22% Non-Hispanic Whi...

Association Between a Body Shape Index and Subclinical Carotid Atherosclerosis in Population Free of Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases
CONCLUSIONS: ABSI, as a novel anthropometric indicator compared with traditional indices, was found to have a closer relationship with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis, even in populations free of hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia.PMID:34483222 | DOI:10.5551/jat.62988

E-004 Focal intracranial vasculopathy as a manifestation of COVID-19-associated acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionTo our knowledge, our case is the first to illustrate the potential for COVID-19 infection to present as a focal intracranial vasculopathy in an otherwise healthy young-patient, resulting in acute ischemic stroke without an underlying hypercoagulable state. Rescue intracranial stenting was necessary to maintain vessel patency and restore intracranial flow.Disclosures A. Mahapatra: None. A. Witek: None. G. Toth: None.

Electrocardiographic abnormalities, preclinical carotid atherosclerosis andcardiovascular risk, in an apparently healthy real-world population: data from the project "No Stroke, No Infarction" of the rotary international - District 2110 "Sicily & amp; Malta"
CONCLUSIONS: A total of 302 (16.2%) subjects were at least at high risk for CV events according to the EUROSCORE, increasing to 681 (36,61% - p < 0.001) adding ACP. The combination of EUROSCORE with ECG may help to stratify CV risk in primary prevention. Carotid ultrasound furtherly increases the power of stratification of asymptomatic patients suitable for pharmacological treatment.PMID:34282855 | DOI:10.23736/S0392-9590.21.04637-X

Association Between Metabolic Syndrome and Asymptomatic Cerebral Arterial Stenosis: A Cross-Sectional Study in Shandong, China
This study explored the association of MetS and its individual components with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis (aICAS) and asymptomatic extracranial arterial stenosis (aECAS) among older Chinese adults. A total of 1988 participants from the Kongcun Town study aged ≥40 years and without a history of stroke were enrolled. The baseline data were obtained via face-to-face interviews. MetS was defined according to International Diabetes Federation criteria. Detection of aICAS was conducted using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, followed by diagnosis via magnetic resonance angiography. The evaluation of aECAS was p...

Sensors, Vol. 21, Pages 424: Photoacoustic Imaging of Human Vasculature Using LED versus Laser Illumination: A Comparison Study on Tissue Phantoms and In Vivo Humans
Kothapalli Vascular diseases are becoming an epidemic with an increasing aging population and increases in obesity and type II diabetes. Point-of-care (POC) diagnosis and monitoring of vascular diseases is an unmet medical need. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) provides label-free multiparametric information of deep vasculature based on strong absorption of light photons by hemoglobin molecules. However, conventional PAI systems use bulky nanosecond lasers which hinders POC applications. Recently, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have emerged as cost-effective and portable optical sources for the PAI of living subjects. Howev...
