Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Primary Sj ögren's Syndrome: Does Inflammation Matter?
Conclusions The markers of endothelial activation and damage and of chronic inflammation investigated until now failed to result predictors of subclinical atherosclerosis or to be associated with increased risk of CV events in SS patients. This may suggest that other mechanisms are implicated with increased prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis in SS or that these biomarkers exert a different mechanism in the pathogenesis of endothelial damage and in the induction of atherosclerosis. Surely, the relationship between the disease itself and inflammatory and immune dysfunction factors is quite complex and still to be cla...

DCA can improve the ACI-induced neurological impairment through negative regulation of Nrf2 signaling pathway.
CONCLUSIONS: TUDCA can alleviate the ACI-induced neurological impairment in rats through mitigating lipid peroxidation and inflammatory response and reducing apoptosis, whose relevant mechanism may be that TUDCA negatively regulates Nrf2 signaling pathway. PMID: 30657576 [PubMed - in process]

Cardiovascular Events After Exposure to Nilotinib in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Long-term Follow-up
Conclusion The incidence of CVEs and the frequency of asymptomatic PAD in this population was low, and CVEs were associated with cardiovascular risk factors. Aggressive risk factor modification and applying standard definitions for measuring cardiovascular outcomes might have contributed to the findings. Further prospective and adequately powered studies are needed to explore the effect of the cardiovascular risk profile on CVEs in CML patients taking nilotinib. Micro-Abstract The present study evaluated the incidence of cardiovascular events (CVEs) in 63 chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients after long-term exposure to ...

Atorvastatin inhibits cholesterol-induced caspase-3 cleavage through down-regulation of p38 and up-regulation of Bcl-2 in the rat carotid artery.
CONCLUSIONS: The resultant data suggest that the anti-apoptotic effect of AV could be partially mediated by the pro-inflammatory protein p38 MAPK and the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 in the rat carotid artery. Atorvastatin can therefore be considered a target drug in the prevention or development of atherosclerotic events. PMID: 28498386 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Metabolic consequences of Helicobacter pylori infection and eradication.
Abstract Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is still the most prevalent infection of the world. Colonization of the stomach by this agent will invariably induce chronic gastritis which is a low-grade inflammatory state leading to local complications (peptic ulcer, gastric cancer, lymphoma) and remote manifestations. While H. pylori does not enter circulation, these extragastric manifestations are probably mediated by the cytokines and acute phase proteins produced by the inflammed mucosa. The epidemiologic link between the H. pylori infection and metabolic changes is inconstant and controversial. Growth delay was des...

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 deficiency reduces melanoma metastasis in liver.
Abstract High circulating cholesterol is associated with hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, and stroke. However, the relation between cholesterol and tumorigenesis/metastasis is controversial. The proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) regulates low-density lipoprotein cholesterol homeostasis by targeting the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) for degradation. PCSK9 is mostly expressed in liver, which is one of the most common sites for metastatic disease. To reveal the function of PCSK9 and also evaluate the impact of cholesterol in liver metastasis development, B16F1 melanoma cells were i...
