Significant Overlapping Modules and Biological Processes between Stroke and Coronary Heart Disease.
Abstract The systematical associations between stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) remain controversial and uncertain. Network construction and modularized analysis have become powerful tools in the field of systems biology research, which can help us to mine the multidimensional characters of correlation between the two diseases in depth. A total of 218 stroke-related and 204 CHD-related genes were identified via the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database; text searching engine (Agilent Literature Search 2.71) and MCODE software were employed for network construction and module division, respectively. F...

Therapeutic Potential of Midkine in Cardiovascular Diseases
Abstract Ischemic heart disease, stroke and their pathological consequences are life‐threatening diseases that account for about half of deaths in developed countries. Pathology of these diseases includes cell death due to ischemia/reperfusion injury, vascular stenosis, and cardiac remodeling. The growth factor midkine plays a pivotal role in these events. Midkine shows an acute cytoprotective effect in ischemia/reperfusion injury at least in part via its anti‐apoptotic effect. Moreover, while midkine promotes endothelial cell proliferation, it also recruits inflammatory cells to lesions. These activities eventually en...

Oxidative Stress and Pathophysiology of Ischemic Stroke: Novel Therapeutic Opportunities.
Abstract Stroke is the second leading cause of death, after ischemic heart disease, and accounts for 9% of deaths worldwide. According to the World Health Organization [WHO], 15 million people suffer stroke worldwide each year. Of these, more than 6 million die and another 5 million are permanently disabled. Reactive oxygen species [ROS] have been implicated in brain injury after ischemic stroke. There is evidence that a rapid increase in the production of ROS immediately after acute ischemic stroke rapidly overwhelm antioxidant defences, causing further tissue damage. These ROS can damage cellular macromolecules ...

Cohort study: Long term calcium intake and rates of all cause and cardiovascular mortality
Source: BMJ Area: News Supplementation with calcium has become increasingly common but recent analyses of trials have suggested a higher risk of both ischemic heart disease and stroke with calcium supplements in women. To investigate the association between long term dietary and supplemental intake of calcium with all cause mortality as well as with cardiovascular mortality, researchers conducted a prospective longitudinal cohort study in Swedish women.   The Swedish mammography cohort, established in 1987-90, provided the data for the purposes of this study. Women were born between 1914 and 1948 and followed-up ...
