National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scoring inconsistencies between neurologists and emergency room nurses
ConclusionsOne-in-three initial NIHSS assessed by both a neurologist and RN had a clinically meaningful score difference between providers. More severe stroke, as indicated by a higher NIHSS was associated with scoring inconsistency between neurologist-RN pairs. Subjective scoring measures, especially those involving a patient having aphasia, was associated with greater score incongruency. Score differences may be attributed to differences in NIHSS training requirements between neurologists and RNs.

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 857: A Comparative Investigation of Automatic Speech Recognition Platforms for Aphasia Assessment Batteries
Qiang Fang The rehabilitation of aphasics is fundamentally based on the assessment of speech impairment. Developing methods for assessing speech impairment automatically is important due to the growing number of stroke cases each year. Traditionally, aphasia is assessed manually using one of the well-known assessment batteries, such as the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), the Chinese Rehabilitation Research Center Aphasia Examination (CRRCAE), and the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE). In aphasia testing, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) administers multiple subtests to assess people with aphasia (PWA). Th...

Language reorganization patterns in global aphasia –evidence from fNIRS
ConclusionThe left SMG plays a critical role in the language function of patients with global aphasia, especially in their abilities to name and repeat. fNIRS is a promising approach to revealing the changes in brain activities in patients with aphasia, and we believe it will contribute to a deeper understanding of the neurological mechanisms and the establishment of a novel treatment approach for global aphasia.

Three-Dimensional Speech Profiles in Stroke Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the current AOS-APP dichotomy has limited validity. We conclude that a continuous multidimensional view of speech variation would be a constructive perspective from which to understand how the left cerebral hemisphere produces speech and that quantitative and normed speech measures should be used to inform differential diagnosis in clinical settings.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.21807609.PMID:36603554 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJSLP-22-00170

Risk factors of impaired employability after cerebral venous thrombosis
CONCLUSIONS: Impaired employability after CVT was associated with motor deficits, aphasia, mental status disorders, and NIHSS score at admission. Even if they recover from CVT without physical disability, patients with a good functional prognosis have a higher risk of employment failure due to their higher rates of aphasia and CVT recurrence.PMID:36601664 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14083

Aphasia associated with non-traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Aphasia presentation is highly heterogenous following non-traumatic SAH. Future research using comprehensive language assessments at multiple time points post onset is required to better understand aphasia presentation and management needs for this population.PMID:36594360 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2022.2157056

Exploring the usability and feasibility of a mobile music listening application for people living in the community with post-stroke aphasia
CONCLUSION: The music listening application is a feasible and usable option for listening to music in people with chronic post-stroke aphasia. This study provides a foundation for the rigorous examination of the usability of music listening technology for people with post-stroke aphasia and the potential investigation of use in acute care facilities and other clinical populations.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONMusic listening has potential therapeutic benefits for people with post-stroke aphasia.Applications for music listening require customisation to enable people with post-stroke aphasia opportunity to listen to their p...
