Comparison of household income in in-hospital outcomes after implantation of left ventricular assist device
CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing LVAD implantation nationwide, low-income was associated with increased comorbidity burden, younger age, and fewer in-hospital complications and all-cause mortality.PMID:34719291 | DOI:10.1177/03913988211056960

Interventions in outside-school hours childcare settings for promoting physical activity amongst schoolchildren aged 4 to 12 years
CONCLUSIONS: Although the review included nine trials, the evidence for how to increase children's physical activity in outside-school hours care settings remains limited, both in terms of certainty of evidence and magnitude of the effect. Of the types of interventions identified, when assessed using GRADE there was low-certainty evidence that multi-component interventions, with a specific physical activity goal may have a small increase in daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and a slight reduction in BMI. There was very low-certainty evidence that interventions increase cardiovascular fitness. By contrast there w...

Ischemic Stroke and Infection: A brief update on mechanisms and potential therapies
Biochem Pharmacol. 2021 Sep 17:114768. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2021.114768. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke triggers a multifaceted inflammatory response in the brain that contributes to secondary brain injury and infarct expansion. In parallel with brain inflammation, ischemic stroke also leads to post-stroke immunosuppression. Stroke-induced leukopenia then predisposes patients to opportunistic infections potentially leading to pneumonia or unrinary tract infections and a worsened stroke outcome. There is evidence that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis plays an important role in the etiology of post-stroke...

Valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation versus repeat surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with a failed aortic bioprosthesis
CONCLUSIONS: ViV TAVI was associated with lower in-hospital mortality but higher 30-day and 6-month all-cause readmission. However, there was no difference in risk of in-hospital stroke, post-procedure pacemaker implantation, MACE, and mortality during 30-day and 6-month readmission compared with repeat SAVR, suggesting that ViV TAVI can be performed safely in carefully selected patients.PMID:34521614 | DOI:10.4244/EIJ-D-21-00472
