Radiation-Induced Carotid Artery Stenosis: What Nurses Need to Know
This article provides an overview of the incidence, risk factors, detection, surveillance, and management of RI-CAS in cancer survivors.METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed®, Embase®, and Web of Science for articles published from January 2008 through June 2022. Search terms included carotid stenosis, radiation therapy, and cancer survivors. This updated review includes content from older references, which serve as a literature-based foundation for the clinical care of cancer survivors at risk for or diagnosed with RI-CAS.FINDINGS: CAS is a long-term sequela of RT to the neck and can lead to serious co...

Aortoenteric fistulae and their multidisciplinary approach
Cir Cir. 2023;91(4):571-575. doi: 10.24875/CIRU.21000702.ABSTRACTAortoenteric fistula is an uncommun life-threatening condition which remains associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It can be primary (aneurysm, neoplasms, radiation therapy, infection) or secondary to vascular prosthesis. Early diagnosis and aggressive surgical treatment are very important to achieve optimal outcomes in these patients. The aim of this article is to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary approach of aortoenteric fistula through the presentation of a clinical case.PMID:37677950 | DOI:10.24875/CIRU.21000702

Reirradiation salvage radiotherapy for recurrent prostate cancer after primary low-dose brachytherapy
CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the treatment of locally recurrent prostate cancer with S-EBRT could provide adequate disease control safely and be used as an additional treatment in the natural history of prostate cancer patients. However, the results are still early and the sample is small; larger studies with longer follow-up would be mandatory.PMID:37672205 | DOI:10.1007/s12094-023-03315-1

Shallow kinetics induced by a metronome (SKIM): A novel contactless respiratory motion management
CONCLUSION: Compared with FB, SKIM can significantly reduce respiratory motion magnitude of thoracic targets. The difference in maximum motion reduction in the overall vector norm, S-I, and A-P directions was significant (p = 0.033, 0.042, 0.011). Our proposed method can be an excellent practical alternative to conventional compression due to its flexibility and ease of implementation.PMID:37672210 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.14147

Current status of the educational environment to acquire and maintain the professional skills of radiotherapy technology and medical physics specialists in Japan: a nationwide survey
This study aimed to investigate the educational environment of radiotherapy technology and medical physics specialists (RTMP) in Japan. We conducted a nationwide questionnaire survey in radiotherapy institutions between June and August 2022. Participants were asked questions regarding the educational system, perspectives on updating RTMP's skills and qualifications, and perspectives on higher education for RTMP at radiotherapy institutions. The results were then analyzed in detail according to three factors: whether the hospital was designed for cancer care, whether it was a Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology (JASTRO)...

Changes in physical function in older women with endometrial cancer with or without adjuvant therapy
CONCLUSIONS: Older women with EC who received adjuvant therapy experienced greater change in PF than those who did not receive adjuvant therapy, particularly women who received chemotherapy. These results were not statistically significant on multivariate analysis.IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: EC survivors may experience changes in PF because of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Additional supportive care may need to be provided to older women to mitigate functional decline.PMID:37668940 | DOI:10.1007/s11764-023-01460-8
