Don't forget the veggies! Identifying and addressing a lack of vegetable education in Physiology
This article reviews the literature from PUBMED, ERIC, and Web of Science, as well as Internet sites and government resources, to identify what should be considered important inclusions relating to dietary vegetable (including legumes and pulses) intake content in university Physiology subjects. The primary aim is to advance the competency relating to good nutrition knowledge for future health professionals to enable them to guide and counsel patients and clients toward better health. A review of the literature provides scant nutritional content relating to vegetable intake, particularly across Physiology subjects and heal...

Dr. Lian Zhu: A Founder of Contemporary Acupuncture Medicine
This article introduces Dr. Lian Zhu, MD, who made great contributions to acupuncture development. Dr. Zhu was a medical doctor, a military physician in her early life, and a high-ranking officer in the health care system of the Chinese government. She became famous as an acupuncturist after learning acupuncture in 1945. She was highly influenced by Zhijun Lu, MD, who learned acupuncture from Zuotian Ren, a TCM doctor in Yan'an, who had cured Chairman Mao Zedong's intractable shoulder pain. Dr. Zhu was one of the 2 earliest acupuncture trainers in the Chinese military health system, helping the Chinese communist military o...

Impact of 2,4-D and glyphosate-based herbicides on morphofunctional and biochemical markers in Scinax squalirostris tadpoles (Anura, Hylidae)
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 21:139918. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139918. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the effects of pesticides on non-target organisms is essential to assess the impact of these xenobiotics on the environment, allowing for a more informative and safer usage. The present study sought to evaluate the response of Scinax squalirostris tadpoles when exposed to different concentrations of two herbicides, DEZ® (i.e., dichlorophenoxyacetic acid or 2,4-D) and Roundup® Original (i.e., glyphosate). We collected 140 tadpoles between Gosner's 25 and 34 stages in a preservation area of the South America...

Participatory Mathematical Modeling Approach for Policymaking during the First Year of the COVID-19 Crisis, Jordan
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Sep;29(9):1738-1746. doi: 10.3201/eid2909.221493.ABSTRACTWe engaged in a participatory modeling approach with health sector stakeholders in Jordan to support government decision-making regarding implementing public health measures to mitigate COVID-19 disease burden. We considered the effect of 4 physical distancing strategies on reducing COVID-19 transmission and mortality in Jordan during March 2020-January 2021: no physical distancing; intermittent physical distancing where all but essential services are closed once a week; intermittent physical distancing where all but essential services are clos...

Measurement and influencing factors of industrial carbon unlocking efficiency under the background of "double carbon"
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 23. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29356-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBased on the panel data of 11 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt of China from 2011 to 2018, the DEA model and Malmquist index were used to calculate the industrial carbon unlocking efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt in a static and dynamic way, and the Tobit model was used to empirically test its influencing factors. The results show that (1) the overall efficiency of industrial carbon unlocking in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is on the rise, but there are regional differences. The eff...

Optimizing renewable ammonia production for a sustainable fertilizer supply chain transition
The objective is to augment and eventually replace conventional ammonia market imports in an economically competitive manner. We performed a case study for Minnesota's ammonia supply chain and found that a full transition to in-state renewable production by 2032 is optimal. This is incentivized by the U.S. federal government's clean hydrogen production credits. This transition results in 99% reduction in carbon intensity along with stable supply costs below $475/mt. New renewable production facilities are an order of magnitude smaller than existing conventional plants. They use both wind and solar resources, and operate dy...
