Orthopaedic surgery academic productivity - how do we measure up?
CONCLUSION: Our objective data provides a factual comparison and baseline assessment of one aspect of research productivity. It can challenge currently held perceptions of performance and can inform conversations about strategic development. We recommend this assessment to other international Colleges and Societies on regular basis. These accurate academic productivity metrics provide opportunity for developing and maintaining a culture of sustained, significant contribution to surgical research.PMID:37697488 | DOI:10.1177/10225536221135471

< em > In silico < /em > genotyping of blood group alleles using WGS data: a comparative study of the Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia
This study reports four alleles (rs12075, rs7683365, rs586178 and rs2298720) of DUFFY, MNS, RH and KIDD blood group systems which were significantly distinct between indigenous Orang Asli and cosmopolitanMalaysians. Eighteen alleles that belong to 14 blood group systems were found statistically distinct in comparison to global population datasets. Although not much significant differences were observed in phenotypes of most blood group systems, major insights were observed when comparing Orang Asli with aboriginal Australians and cosmopolitanMalaysians. This study serves as the first of its kind to utilize genomic data to i...

The role of lung ultrasound for detecting atelectasis, consolidation, and/or pneumonia in the adult cardiac surgery population: A scoping review of the literature
Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) frequently occur after cardiac surgery and may lead to adverse patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic tools such as auscultation or chest x-ray have inferior diagnostic accuracy compared to the gold standard (chest computed tomography). Lung ultrasound (LUS) is an emerging area of research combating these issues. However, no review has employed a formal search strategy to examine the role of LUS in identifying the specific PPCs of atelectasis, consolidation, and/or pneumonia  or investigated the ability of LUS to predict these complications in this cohort.

A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies meeting the following criteria were included in the review: the condition being considered was MSK health, the intervention was COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions, cross sectional studies, cohort studies, case controlled, prospective studies and retrospective studies. Data were extracted by 2 independent researchers. Risk of bias was...

Red fire ants, a dreaded pest, have invaded Europe
Last week, international experts warned that invasive species are costing the world economy almost half-a-trillion dollars annually . Today, researchers confirmed that one of the most fearsome invaders—the red fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta ), a pest native to South America that packs a painful sting and infests houses and crops—has taken hold in Italy. It is the first European detection of colonies, which are known to drive out native ants and other wildlife and damage electrical equipment. “The findings are an important call for immediate action,” says Cleo Bertelsmeier, an expert in invasive inse...

“The Greatest Scientist of All Time” says Scientific American. Who is it?
BY MIKE MAGEE When it comes to our earthly survival as a human species, words are often under-powered and off-the-mark. Clearer concepts, definitions and terms are required for clarity. Here are five terms that are useful and worth remembering: Planetary Boundaries Earth Systems Human Perturbations Planetary Scale Destabilization Holocene Epoch vs. Anthropogenic Epoch  These terms all tie back to a single source – a child of World War II, only seven when his home in Amsterdam was overrun by Nazis. His father was a waiter, his mother a cook in a local hospital. He’d later recall with a sh...

Nature and extent of disruptions to staff clinical supervision practices in health care settings due to COVID-19: A survey study
CONCLUSION: There were substantial disruptions to several parameters of clinical supervision due to COVID-19, that may pose a threat to high quality supervision. Health care workers reported pandemic-induced stress and mental health challenges that were not always addressed by effective restorative supervision practices.PMID:37694931 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.13036

Playing it safe: The relationship between parent attitudes to risk and injury, and Children's adventurous play and physical activity
CONCLUSIONS: We found a divergence between the outcomes parents desire for their children through engagement with risk and the play activities they are comfortable with in practice. Parent attitudes to risk and injury are potentially modifiable factors that may increase children's affordances for adventurous play and physical activity. Parent education interventions that provide practical approaches to address injury concerns and support children's risk-taking in play outdoors are recommended.PMID:37696315 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102536

Transition readiness and anxiety among adolescents with a chronic condition and their parents: A cross-sectional international study
CONCLUSION: Transition readiness should be determined by an assessment of knowledge, self-management and psychosocial skills instead of age alone. Further research should address how well transition readiness predicts positive health outcomes after the transfer of care.IMPLICATIONS FOR PATIENT CARE: Transition readiness and self-management skills should be formally assessed because positive feedback may decrease the anxiety of both adolescents and their parents regarding the transfer of care.REPORTING METHOD: We have adhered to the STROBE statement, using STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies.PATIENT OR PUBLIC INVOL...

Using within-person change in three large panel studies to estimate personality age trajectories
J Pers Soc Psychol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1037/pspp0000482. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHow does personality change when people get older? Numerous studies have investigated this question, overall supporting the idea of so-called personality maturation. However, heterogeneous findings have left open questions, such as whether maturation continues in old age and how large the effects are. We suggest that the heterogeneity is partly rooted in methodological issues. First, studies may have failed to recover age effects as they did not stringently separate within-person changes from confounding between-person differences. Sec...
