Disabled members look to the legacy of 2022
The first plenary sessions of UNISON’s annual disabled members conference took place this morning, with the cost of living and securing a legacy for the unions’ Year of the Disabled Worker dominating proceedings. But it also saw member Paddy Toner presented with his award as this year’s winner of the union’s Local Service Champions Awards by general secretary Christina McAnea (pictured above). Mr Toner is a rehabilitation worker for the visually impaired at Halton Borough Council. He himself is registered blind. The learning experiences of dyslexic medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a phenomenological study
AbstractDyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty that impacts on reading and writing abilities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical schools have been forced to undertake distance learning and assessment. The wider literature suggested that e-learning might pose additional challenges for dyslexic students. Here we explore their overall experiences of learning/studying during this time in a phenomenological study. IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 9344: The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Students ’ Mental Health and Sleep in Saudi Arabia
Conclusion: This study has provided evidence that a lower level of psychological resilience and insomnia were associated with mental health problems among undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia, thus enhancing psychological resilience and interventions to support sleep and mental health are vital to support student well-being outcomes throughout the pandemic.

Environmental Pollution: An Under-recognized Threat to Children’s Health, Especially in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Conclusions Patterns of disease are changing rapidly in LMICs. Pollution-related chronic diseases are becoming more common. This shift presents a particular problem for children, who are proportionately more heavily exposed than are adults to environmental pollutants and for whom these exposures are especially dangerous. Conclusion This literature review provides stimulation for debate, but does not add much in the way of proof, around the issue of whether low levels of industrial chemicals are causing harm to people on a wide scale, and if or how they should be regulated differently than they are today. The study highlights a number of valid issues for debate (see below), but provides only half of the debate in the publication.
