Shallow or deep? The impact of orthographic depth on visual processing impairments in developmental dyslexia
Ann Dyslexia. 2022 Apr;72(1):171-196. doi: 10.1007/s11881-021-00249-7. Epub 2022 Mar 14.ABSTRACTThe extent to which impaired visual and phonological mechanisms may contribute to the manifestation of developmental dyslexia across orthographies of varying depth has yet to be fully established. By adopting a cross-linguistic approach, the current study aimed to explore the nature of visual and phonological processing in developmental dyslexic readers of shallow (Italian) and deep (English) orthographies, and specifically the characterisation of visual processing deficits in relation to orthographic depth. To achieve this aim,...

Second-language learning difficulties in Italian children with reading difficulties.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that memory mainly influences accuracy in English writing and, together with phonological skills, plays an important role in reading accuracy. Socio-economic status also plays an important role in L2 learning. PMID: 32302006 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Latent profile analysis of students' reading development and the relation of cognitive variables to reading profiles.
Abstract Previous studies have showed that early problems with word decoding can lead to poor performance in text reading and comprehension and suggest that poor readers often struggle with reading deficits throughout their school years. Therefore, early detection of those children who are at risk for slow reading development and/or who belong to the lowest reading profiles is essential in order to organize proper support. The present study explores the heterogeneity and prevalence of latent reading profiles among 769 Finnish- and German-reading students during their first and second school years in three countrie...

The relationship of domain-general serial order memory and reading ability in school children with and without dyslexia
Publication date: May 2020Source: Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Volume 193Author(s): Wibke Maria Hachmann, Nathan Cashdollar, Francesca Postiglione, Remo JobAbstractRecent evidence suggests that reading development when learning alphabetic languages is related to the underlying cognitive ability to maintain the serial order of information in short-term memory (STM). However, it remains unclear at which time point in reading development serial order STM is most important. Here, we established a crucial link between the reading development of primary school children and their serial order STM performance for both...

Language and Pragmatics Across Neurodevelopmental Disorders: An Investigation Using the Italian Version of CCC-2.
Abstract Impairments in structural language and pragmatics are well recognized in different neurodevelopmental disorders, yet in clinical work the discrimination of children with various language difficulties into different diagnostic profile is still a major challenge. Using the CCC-2 questionnaire this study assesses and compares language competences in a sample of Italian children (aged 8-10) with typical development (n = 26) and in children with different neurodevelopmental conditions: high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (n = 19), Language Disorder with associated Developmental Dyslexia (n = ...

Neuropsychological Functioning and Temperament Traits in a Czech Sample of Children and Adolescents at Familial Risk of Bipolar Disorder
Conclusions: Neuropsychological impairment does not seem to be a trait marker of BD in the premorbid stage. Temperament with low effortful control and low attention focusing might be associated with the development of mood disorders in BO. Introduction Children of parents with bipolar disorder (BD), i.e., bipolar offspring (BO), have an increased risk of developing the disorder than offspring of mentally healthy parents (control offspring; CO), with an estimated heritability of 59% (1). The clinical staging model for BD was developed to improve early interventions and to prevent its onset (2, 3). BO with no symptoms ...

Reading in a transparent second language with limited orality: The case of high school students with dyslexia in Latin
Research has shown that individuals with dyslexia have difficulty in reading not only in their native language but also in a second language (L2). The considered L2, however, has always been a language acquired through exposure to both written and oral forms. The present study examines the case of Italian adolescents reading in Latin as an L2, which is the special case of a dead language with very limited use of orality. As the learning of Latin is mainly based on the acquisition of grammar, this study also examined the relationship between grammatical proficiency and reading ability in Latin. Results suggested that, compa...

Training Implicit Learning of Spelling in Italian Children With Developmental Dyslexia
It had been hypothesized that, in developmental dyslexia (DD), an implicit learning deficit explains children's problems in encoding the phoneme–grapheme correspondences underlying the writing system and thus the development of spelling skills. The present study tested the efficacy of an intervention to facilitate implicit learning of context-sensitive spelling rules with Italian children with DD. Mapping of phonological and orthographic information during spelling was implicitly modeled during 6 sessions of intervention. Thirty-eight elementary-aged children with DD were assigned either to this (phonological–orthograp...

The influence of DCDC2 risk genetic variants on reading: Testing main and haplotypic effects
In this study, we tested the effects of these genetic variants on DD as a categorical trait and on quantitative reading-related measures in a sample of 555 Italian nuclear families with 930 offspring, of which 687 were diagnosed with DD. We conducted both single-marker and haplotype analyses, finding that the READ1-deletion was significantly associated with reading, whereas no significant haplotype associations were found. Our findings add further evidence to support the hypothesis of a DCDC2 contribution to inter-individual variation in distinct indicators of reading (dis)ability in transparent languages (i.e., reading ac...
