Cancers, Vol. 14, Pages 4642: Recall Radiation Pneumonitis: A Rare Syndrome That Should Be Recognized
En Wu Recall radiation pneumonitis (RRP) is a rare but severe condition which has been mainly detected in the previously irradiated lung of patients with cancer after administering inciting agents, most commonly antineoplastic regimens including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. More recently, coronavirus disease vaccines were found to induce RRP. In addition to typical radiation pneumonitis (RP) or drug-induced interstitial lung disease, the management of RRP requires withholding inciting agents and steroid therapy. Thus, the occurrence of RRP could significantly impact cancer treatment, given that inc...

Racial and Ethnic Variation in COVID-19 Vaccination Uptake Among Medicare Beneficiaries with Cancer History
CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate racial and ethnic differences in vaccine uptake among Medicare beneficiaries with cancer history. Effective strategies are needed to help increase vaccine confidence and uptake among adults with cancer history.PMID:36149576 | DOI:10.1007/s40615-022-01415-2

IBCL-054 The Effects of an mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine Booster on Immune Responses in Cancer-Bearing Veterans
Serum antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein are surrogate markers of immune response. We evaluated antibody levels pre and post third vaccine (booster) and compared responses among different cancer-bearing and normal veterans. Both total and neutralizing antibody levels increased in most subjects after the booster, but the frequency and magnitude of responses were lower in patients with B-cell malignancies undergoing therapy. Neutralizing antibody responses to omicron variants were reduced relative to wild-type and other variants.

Association of COVID-19 With Major Arterial and Venous Thrombotic Diseases: A Population-Wide Cohort Study of 48 Million Adults in England and Wales
CONCLUSIONS: High relative incidence of vascular events soon after COVID-19 diagnosis declines more rapidly for arterial thromboses than VTEs. However, incidence remains elevated up to 49 weeks after COVID-19 diagnosis. These results support policies to prevent severe COVID-19 by means of COVID-19 vaccines, early review after discharge, risk factor control, and use of secondary preventive agents in high-risk patients.PMID:36121907 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.060785

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –10th September, 2022.
This article is adapted fromVoices in the Code: A Story About People, Their Values, and the Algorithm They Made, out Sept. 8 from Russell Sage Foundation Press. In May 2021, I got a call I never expected. I was working on abook about A.I. ethics, focused on the algorithm that gives out kidneys to transplant patients in the United States. Darren Stewart —a data scientist from UNOS, the nonprofit that runs the kidney allocation process—was calling to get my take: How many decimal places should they include when calculating each patient’s allocation score? The score is an incredibly important number, given it determines w...

COVID-19 Vaccination in Cancer Patients: A Review Article
This article aims to review the recent evidences and recommendations about COVID-19 vaccination in cancer patients.Current guidelines recommend that patients with cancer should have the priority to receive the vaccine given their immunocompromised state. The timing of administration varies depending on cancer type and treatment. Generally, the vaccine should be given before starting the chemotherapy if possible or in between chemotherapy cycles and away from nadir phase. For other cancer treatments, it is recommended to give the vaccine when there is evidence of blood count recovery. In general, induction therapy and treat...

mRNA delivery technologies: Toward clinical translation
Int Rev Cell Mol Biol. 2022;372:207-293. doi: 10.1016/bs.ircmb.2022.04.010. Epub 2022 Jul 7.ABSTRACTMessenger RNA (mRNA)-therapies have recently taken a huge step toward clinic thanks to the first mRNA-based medicinal products marketed. mRNA features for clinical purposes are improved by chemical modifications, but the inclusion in a delivery system is a regular requirement. mRNA nanomedicines must be designed for the specific therapeutic purpose, protecting the nucleic acid and facilitating the overcoming of biological barriers. Polymers, polypeptides, and cationic lipids are the main used materials to design mRNA deliver...
