Old foes following news ways? —Pandemic-related changes in the epidemiology of viral respiratory tract infections
ConclusionCompared to pre-pandemic years, we observed a dramatic increase in pediatric RTIs with an incrementing spectrum of viruses and a predominance in Rhino/Enterovirus infections – leading to a high rate of hospital admissions, particularly in conjunction with other viruses. This caused an acute shortage in medical care and may also be followed by an increase of virus-triggered secondary chronic respiratory diseases like asthma—rendering a burden on the health system.

Prevalence and associated outcomes of co-infection between SARS-CoV-2 and influenza: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Since the first case of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection was reported in late 2019, the ensuing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread rapidly across the globe, causing an unprecedented health burden in many countries. As of June 7, 2023, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused 767.7 million infections and 6.9 million deaths worldwide [1]. Although the World Health Organization declared the end of the pandemic emergency on May 5, 2023 [2], endemics remain possible as the virus continues to undergo genetic mutations [3].

Exploring missed opportunities for influenza vaccination and influenza vaccine co-administration patterns among Italian older adults: a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: A sizeable proportion of older adults who received other recommended vaccines during the last influenza season did not receive SIV. This share of missed opportunities, which are subject to some social inequalities, may be addressed by increasing vaccine co-administration rates and implementing tailored health promotion interventions.PMID:37632235 | DOI:10.1093/eurpub/ckad155

New Imidazolium Alkaloids with Broad Spectrum of Action from the Marine Bacterium < em > Shewanella aquimarina < /em >
Pharmaceutics. 2023 Aug 14;15(8):2139. doi: 10.3390/pharmaceutics15082139.ABSTRACTThe continuous outbreak of drug-resistant bacterial and viral infections imposes the need to search for new drug candidates. Natural products from marine bacteria still inspire the design of pharmaceuticals. Indeed, marine bacteria have unique metabolic flexibility to inhabit each ecological niche, thus expanding their biosynthetic ability to assemble unprecedented molecules. The One-Strain-Many-Compounds approach and tandem mass spectrometry allowed the discovery of a Shewanella aquimarina strain as a source of novel imidazolium alkaloids vi...
