The evaluation of the relationship between COVID-19 and autoimmune responses with a cross-sectional trial using medical records
Conclusions: The SARS-CoV-2 infection could act as a triggering factor for developing autoimmune and/or autoinflammatory dysregulation in genetically predisposed individuals.

Relapse of Evans syndrome following BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) COVID-19 vaccine: case report and literature review
Conclusions: Although it is unclear whether the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and relapse of ES in our patient is coincidental or causal, it highlights the need for monitoring of serious outcomes following vaccination.

Outcome of COVID-19 and tolerance of Remdesivir in patients with renal failure: a single center experience from Pakistan
Conclusions: COVID-19 in renal failure has a high risk for ICU admissions leading to increased mortality. Multiple comorbidities and raised inflammatory markers are predictors of poor outcomes. We observed no significant drug-related adverse effects, and none of our patients required discontinuation of RDV due to worsening renal function.

South Africa: National TB Indaba Reveals Way Forward for Retaking Control of Tuberculosis After Covid-19 Setbacks
[Daily Maverick] TB killed more than 56,000 people in South Africa in 2021 according to the World Health Organisation. In the same year, the WHO estimated that there were over 304,000 new TB infections. South Africa is one of the highest-burden countries in the world. The impact of TB -- often forgotten -- on individuals, families and the country's health system and its economy is significant and requires increased focus.

Neutralizing antibodies response to novel SARS-CoV-2 omicron sublineages in long-term care facility residents after the fourth dose of monovalent BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccination
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the etiologic agent of the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19), has been progressively adapting to the human host since the beginning of the epidemic1. The Omicron variant, first identified in South Africa in November 2021, is the best adapted variant of concern (VOC), combining highly efficient binding to the ACE-2 cell receptor and immune escape. Since its emergence, Omicron has evolved into a plethora of descendant sublineages, including BA.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4, and BA.5.

SARS-CoV-2 infection and pulmonary tuberculosis in children and adolescents: a case-control study
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has had an impact on the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic but evidence on the possible interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and TB, especial...

Effect of hydrogen/oxygen therapy for ordinary COVID-19 patients: a propensity-score matched case-control study
Hydrogen/oxygen therapy contribute to ameliorate dyspnea and disease progression in patients with respiratory diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that hydrogen/oxygen therapy for ordinary coronavirus disease ...

Assessing Biomarkers in Viral Infection
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2023;1412:159-173. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-28012-2_8.ABSTRACTCurrent biomarkers to assess the risk of complications of both acute and chronic viral infection are suboptimal. Prevalent viral infections like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C virus, herpes viruses, and, more recently, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) may be associated with significant sequelae including the risk of cardiovascular disease, other end-organ diseases, and malignancies. This review considers some biomarkers which have been investigated in diagnosis and prognosis of key viral infectio...

Viral Infections and Schizophrenia: A Comprehensive Review
Viruses. 2023 Jun 9;15(6):1345. doi: 10.3390/v15061345.ABSTRACTSchizophrenia is a complex mental disorder with multiple genetic and environmental factors contributing to its pathogenesis. Viral infections have been suggested to be one of the environmental factors associated with the development of this disorder. We comprehensively review all relevant published literature focusing on the relationship between schizophrenia and various viral infections, such as influenza virus, herpes virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), retrovirus, coronavirus, and Borna virus. These viruses may i...

Immunomodulatory Role of Interferons in Viral and Bacterial Infections
Int J Mol Sci. 2023 Jun 14;24(12):10115. doi: 10.3390/ijms241210115.ABSTRACTInterferons are a group of immunomodulatory substances produced by the human immune system in response to the presence of pathogens, especially during viral and bacterial infections. Their remarkably diverse mechanisms of action help the immune system fight infections by activating hundreds of genes involved in signal transduction pathways. In this review, we focus on discussing the interplay between the IFN system and seven medically important and challenging viruses (herpes simplex virus (HSV), influenza, hepatitis C virus (HCV), lymphocytic chor...
