Moving Beyond the Pandemic: Insights from a Shared Experience
Anesth Analg. 2022 Nov 1;135(5):899. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006254. Epub 2022 Oct 21.ABSTRACTFor over two years the resilience of humanity was tested with the coronavirus outbreak. At its outset the scientific community rallied and did its very best to disseminate accumulating knowledge in real time to contain the outbreak. Sobering lessons were learned in managing such a global crisis. Critical care anesthesiologists in particular were instrumental as decision makers and their insight is reflected in a review of how we may be better prepared in the future should another virus spread with such scale and severity. Prevalence of COVID-19 and Risk Factors for Infection Among Pediatric Anesthesia Patients: A Report From the PEACOC Research Network
CONCLUSIONS: Rates of COVID-19 in pediatric anesthesia patients were consistently lower than in the general population. Independent risk factors of a positive test for children were identified. This is the first time universal testing for a single infectious disease was undertaken on a wide scale. As such, the association of infection with surgical case type or emergency case status is unprecedented.PMID:36269171 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006227

Transcarotid artery revascularization can safely be performed with regional anesthesia and no intensive care unit stay
Hospital resource use is under constant review, and the extent and intensity of postoperative care requirements for vascular surgical procedures is particularly relevant in the setting of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and its impact on staffed intensive care unit (ICU) beds. We sought to evaluate the feasibility of regional anesthesia (RA) and low-intensity postoperative care for patients undergoing transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) at our institution.

A Newly Developed Interprofessional < em > In-Situ < /em > Simulation-Based Training for Airway Management of COVID-19 Patients: Identification of Challenges and Safety Gaps, and Assessment of the Participants' Reaction
CONCLUSION: The newly developed ISS training was feasible for busy healthcare practitioners to safely perform airway management procedures for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients without affecting bedside care. Anticipation of difficult airways and speaking up were the most frequent challenges identified across all specialties in this study.PMID:36258839 | PMC:PMC9534185 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4756

COVID-19 Vaccination and the Timing of Surgery Following COVID-19 Infection
Conclusions: Surgery shortly following COVID-19 infection was not associated with higher risks among fully vaccinated patients or among patients who underwent surgery without general anesthesia. Further research will be valuable to understand additional factors that modify perioperative risks associated with prior COVID-19 infection.

Thrombosis-Related Loss of Arterial Lines in the First Wave of COVID-19 and Non-COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that arterial line complications due to thrombosis are more likely in COVID-19 patients and supports the need for further research on the association between COVID-19 and arterial line dysfunction requiring replacement.PMID:36219579 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006214

Conservative treatment with mouthwashes followed by tongue photo biomodulation therapy  in Covid-19: a case report
ConclusionsThe implication of our report is that we promote the judicious use of topical antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and steroids for when they are indicated. We propose lidocaine-containing mouth rinses and steroid mouthwash as an initial, symptomatic treatment regimen for ‘COVID-19 tongue.’ If there is failure of resolution, we recommend photobiomodulation therapy.
