Mechanically Ventilated Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 Had a Higher Chance of In-Hospital Death If Treated With High-Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Before Intubation
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with respiratory failure from COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation, patients receiving HFNC before intubation had a higher chance of in-hospital death. Decisions on initial respiratory support modality should weigh the risks of intubation with potential increased mortality associated with HFNC.PMID:36730796 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006211

Understanding the Intricacies of Delivering Compassionate Care in the Intensive Care Unit and What Hinders It: A Qualitative Study of Members of 2 Critical Care Societies
CONCLUSIONS: Compassionate attitudes can be hindered by an underlying worry about the decision made by the patient and their family, a lack of confidence in making hard moral decisions, and the burdens of burnout.PMID:36730020 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006295

Burnout Among Chinese Anesthesiologists After the COVID-19 Pandemic Peak: A National Survey
CONCLUSIONS: The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the psychological well-being of anesthesiologists still exists more than 1 year after the outbreak. Building better institutional support and cultivating stronger resilience may be helpful future intervention measures.PMID:36729947 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006298

Transcarotid artery revascularization can safely be performed with regional anesthesia and no intensive care unit stay
Objective: Hospital resource use is under constant review, and the extent and intensity of postoperative care requirements for vascular surgical procedures is particularly relevant in the setting of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and its impact on staffed intensive care unit (ICU) beds. We sought to evaluate the feasibility of regional anesthesia (RA) and low-intensity postoperative care for patients undergoing transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) at our institution.

Diagnostic and treatment dilemma during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: a primary pulmonary lymphoma presenting as a cavitary mass in a patient with coronavirus disease 2019: a case report
ConclusionA careful multidisciplinary strategy is required to expeditiously diagnose and treat aggressive cancers of the respiratory tract in patients acutely infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 while observing practices to prevent healthcare worker infection during the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Case series on successful anesthetic management of COVID-19-positive obstetric patients undergoing emergency cesarean section
J Family Med Prim Care. 2022 Oct;11(10):6541-6544. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_705_22. Epub 2022 Oct 31.ABSTRACTCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak was first reported in Wuhan, and its manifestations in pregnancy can be variable ranging from mild illness to severe acute respiratory syndrome. Management of such patients depends on severity of illness and gestational age. Case 1: A 67-year-old elderly primigravida with multiple comorbidities (type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy) and mild COVID-19 infection presented for emergency cesarean. Cesarean was conducted under spinal anest...

COVID-19 associated Mucormycosis (CAM): Implications for perioperative physicians & #8211; A narrative review
Anju Gupta, Bhavana Kayarat, Nishkarsh GuptaSaudi Journal of Anaesthesia 2023 17(1):58-64 Mucormycosis once considered a rare disease with an incidence of 0.005 to 1.7 per million, has become one of the greatest menaces during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. India alone has contributed to nearly 70% of the global caseload of COVID-associated mucormycosis (CAM) and it had even been declared as a notifiable disease. Second wave of COVID-19 pandemic saw a steep rise in the incidence of mucormycosis and these patients have been presenting to anesthesiologists for various surgical procedures due to its ...

Hemodynamic changes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection presenting for cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia: a retrospective case-control study
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in pregnancy, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including increased risk for preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, and overall maternal morbidity and mortality.1 –6 The increased cesarean delivery rate has been attributed to critical maternal status, especially severe COVID-19 and preeclampsia. 4, 6 Increased COVID-19 severity is associated with higher odds of adverse peripartum outcomes.

Comparative Analysis of 30-Day Readmission, Reoperation, and Morbidity between Posterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion Performed in Inpatient and Outpatient Settings
CONCLUSIONS: The 30-day outcomes were statistically similar between surgical settings, indicating that PCDF can be safely performed as an outpatient procedure. Surrogates for poor health predicted negative outcomes. These results are particularly important as we continue to shift spinal surgery to outpatient centers. This importance has been highlighted by the need to unburden inpatient sites, particularly during public health emergencies, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.PMID:36560853 | DOI:10.31616/asj.2021.0523
