Effect of IL-6 and CRP titer with antibody level on severity of COVID-19 infection
This study includes one hundred patients infected with the viral pathogen known as SARS-CoV-2 and fifty healthy individuals attending Al-Salam Hospital in Baghdad. Approximately 5 ml of samples were collected from each virus-infected patient and healthy control, then separated by centrifuge and stored in a refrigerator until testing. The study timeline was from October 1st, 2020, to January 15th, 2021. The SARS-CoV-2 (IgM, IgG) antibody was measured using the immunofluorescent technique with the Afias instrument. The IL-6 was measured using the ELISA technique with a human Elisa reader. The CRP titer was measured using the...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1616: Differences in Trends in Admissions and Outcomes among Patients from a Secondary Hospital in Madrid during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Hospital-Based Epidemiological Analysis (2020 & ndash;2022)
This study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on daily health care in terms of incidence, critical patients, and mortality. We describe the characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients, comparing variables over the different waves. We performed a descriptive, retrospective study using the historical records of patients hospitalized with COVID-19. We describe demographic characteristics, admissions, and occupancy. Time series allowed us to visualize and analyze trends and patterns, and identify several waves during the 27-month period. A total of 3315 patients had been hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19. ...

Artefactually low creatinine by Beckman Coulter enzymatic method due to immunoglobulin M paraprotein interference
Ann Clin Biochem. 2023 Jul 23:45632231190507. doi: 10.1177/00045632231190507. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn 81-year-old man was admitted to hospital with symptomatic coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection. He had a background of progressive chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy associated with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia. His plasma creatinine on four separate samples was inconceivably low (all ≤13 μmol/L), as measured by a Beckman Coulter enzymatic assay) after being 72 μmol/L 3 months earlier. On further investigation, his serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) was 15.4 g/L and his plasma creatinine measu...

Exploring clinicians ’ experiences of how efficient virtual elective knee clinics are compared to traditional face-to-face clinics
This study aims to explore clinicians’ experiences of how efficient virtual elective knee clinics (VEKC) are in an orthopaedic setting in comparison to traditional face-to-face clinics. The study utilised a mixed-methods study to obtain qualitative and quantitative data. This involved an anonymous online survey in addition to in-depth qualitative interviews conducted with a purposive sample of multidisciplinary colleagues who work with the VEKC in an acute hospital. Three overarching themes and nine sub-themes emerged in the qualitative analysis. Overall, clinicians in both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the...

P323L Mutation in a Case with Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 PCR Positivity
In this report, a case of 37-year-old male who is working in the hospital's COVID-19 molecular diagnostics laboratory was presented. He was vaccinated with three doses of inactivated vaccine, CoronaVac (Sinovac Biotech, Beijing-China), within the context of the vaccination program carried out in Türkiye. His first SARS-CoV-2 positivity was detected on 12.01.2021, four months after the last vaccination, and he continued to be detected positive for SARS-CoV-2 throughout a period of 39 days by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) tests performed with 2-3-day intervals. The patient has a 20-p...
