Case Report: Case Series of Kocuria palustris Bacteremia among Immunocompromised Patients
We present three cases of bacteremia in immunocompromised patients admitted to our hospital; one patient was receiving chemotherapy for gall bladder carcinoma, the second was on maintenance hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease, and the third was receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia. All three patients presented with a fever in the setting of neutropenia during the course of treatment with chemotherapy (in Cases 1 and 3) or hemodialysis (in Case 2). The blood culture samples of all the patients had pure isolates of Kocuria species K. palustris, which was identified by matrix assisted laser desorption ionisat...

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infections in Hospitalized Patients in Peru
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 18:tpmd230054. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0054. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a knowledge gap in the epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) causing bloodstream infections (BSIs) in Peru. Through a surveillance study in 13 hospitals of 10 Peruvian regions (2017-2019), we assessed the proportion of MRSA among S. aureus BSIs as well as the molecular typing of the isolates. A total of 166 S. aureus isolates were collected, and 36.1% of them were MRSA. Of note, MRSA isolates with phenotypic and genetic characteristics of the hospital-associated Chilean-Cordobes clone (...

Self-harm among youth during the first 28 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada: a population-based study
We reported relative differences between observed and expected monthly rates overall and by age group (10-13 yr and 14-17 yr), sex and mental health service use (new and continuing).RESULTS: In this population of about 1.3 million children and adolescents, rates of acute care visits for self-harm during the pandemic were higher than expected for emergency department visits (0.27/1000 population v. 0.21/1000 population; adjusted rate ratio [RR] 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.19-1.39) and hospital admissions (0.74/10 000 population v. 0.43/10 000 population, adjusted RR 1.72, 95% CI 1.46-2.03). This increase was primar...

Genotyping of the rs1800440 Polymorphism in CYP1B1 Gene and the rs9258883 Polymorphism in HLA-B Gene in a Spanish Cohort of 223 Patients with Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia
Acta Derm Venereol. 2023 Sep 18;103:adv9604. doi: 10.2340/actadv.v103.9604.ABSTRACTThe pathogenesis of frontal fibrosing alopecia has been linked to specific genetic variants. CYP1B1 codes for a component of the cytochrome p450 machinery that is involved in the metabolism of xenobiotic oestrogens. The study of the prevalence of polymorphisms in this gene may help to understand their role in the development of frontal fibrosing alopecia. The aim of this study is to describe the frequency of genetic variations in the alleles HLA-B*07:02 and CYP1B1 in patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia. A cross-sectional study was desig...

T-scans in implant procedures
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):35-38. doi: 10.6026/97320630019035. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTT scans are a breakthrough in technology which allows the user to accurately analyze the occlusion of a patient with minimal to zero errors. They are used during prosthodontic rehabilitation to map out the patient's occlusion to plan for replacements. Such a high advancement in technology has a backdraw. The cost of the equipment is a concern for simple dental practitioners. There are no large scale studies using T scans in determining the occlusion. Therefore, it is of interest to analyze the use of T scans in determining the pe...

Breastfeeding among Hispanic and Black Women: Barriers and Support
We describe barriers and supports for the practice of breastfeeding, with particular focus on Black and Hispanic women in the United States. We note that breastfeeding patterns reported by WIC agencies is highly variable across the country and within states. The global campaign to support breastfeeding, Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, and its implementation in the US is described, as well as Healthy People goals and the mixture of policies across the US that provide incomplete support for breastfeeding mothers.PMID:37719645 | PMC:PMC10503689

Body composition in pediatric patients
Nutr Clin Pract. 2023 Oct;38 Suppl 2:S84-S102. doi: 10.1002/ncp.11061.ABSTRACTUndernutrition is highly prevalent in children who are critically ill and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, including a higher risk of infection due to transitory immunological disorders, inadequate wound healing, reduced gut function, longer dependency on mechanical ventilation, and longer hospital stays compared with eutrophic children who are critically ill. Nutrition care studies have proposed that early interventions targeting nutrition assessment can prevent or minimize the complications of undernutrition. Stress promote...

Correlation of Dietary Macro- and Micro-Mineral Intake with Seminal Plasma Quality/Quantity and Oxidant/Antioxidant Status in Infertile Compared to the Normal Men: a Case-Control Study
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03834-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMale infertility is a global public health issue, but studies on the correlation between the dietary components and sperm quality showed inconclusive results due to the heterogeneous population with different dietary habits and environmental stimuli. Herein, the correlation of dietary macro- and micro-mineral intake was evaluated with quality/quantity and oxidant/antioxidant status of seminal fluid in infertile compared to the healthy men. One hundred twenty men attending to the infertility clinic of Ayatollah Mousavi Hospital ...
