New SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant with Spike Protein Mutation Y451H, Kilifi, Kenya, March-May 2023
We report a newly emerged SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariant FY.4 that has mutations Y451H in spike and P42L in open reading frame 3a proteins. FY.4 emergence coincided with increased SARS-CoV-2 cases in coastal Kenya during April-May 2023. Continued SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance is needed to identify new lineages to inform COVID-19 outbreak prevention.PMID:37708843 | DOI:10.3201/eid2911.230894

One-step selective layer assemble: A versatile approach for the development of a SARS-CoV-2 electrochemical immunosensor
Anal Chim Acta. 2023 Oct 16;1278:341726. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2023.341726. Epub 2023 Aug 16.ABSTRACTThe appearance of new viruses and diseases has made the development of rapid and reliable diagnostic tests crucial. In light of it, we proposed a new method for assembling an electrochemical immunosensor, based on a one-step approach for selective layer formation. For this purpose, a mixture containing the immobilizing agent (polyxydroxybutyrate, PHB) and the recognition element (antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein) was prepared and used to modify a screen-printed carbon electrode with electrodeposited graphene ...

Wastewater Surveillance Data as a Complement to Emergency Department Visit Data for Tracking Incidence of Influenza A and Respiratory Syncytial Virus - Wisconsin, August 2022-March 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Sep 15;72(37):1005-1009. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7237a2.ABSTRACTWastewater surveillance has been used to assist public health authorities in tracking local transmission of SARS-CoV-2. The usefulness of wastewater surveillance to track community spread of other respiratory pathogens, including influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), is less clear. During the 2022-23 respiratory diseases season, concentrations of influenza A virus and RSV in wastewater samples in three major Wisconsin cities were compared with emergency department (ED) visits associated with these pathogens. In all...

Bibliometric analysis of the worldwide scientific production on COVID-19 infection and cerebrovascular disease
CONCLUSION: It was observed that the United States was the country with the highest scientific production on COVID-19 and cerebrovascular disease in the year 2020 in the different health areas; however, more research is still needed worldwide for a better analysis of the bibliometric indicators on the subject.PMID:37706386 | PMC:PMC10284493 | DOI:10.4103/aca.aca_70_22

Risk factors of Omicron variant associated acute encephalitis/encephalopathy in children
CONCLUSIONS: Most cases of COVID-19-associated acute encephalitis/encephalopathy showed no evidence of direct viral invasion but associations with older age, increased peripheral neutrophil, and serum procalcitonin. These findings may imply the neutrophil-mediated systemic inflammatory response plays an important role on central nerve system, leading to cerebral dysfunction.PMID:37709632 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmii.2023.08.010
