Teal Pumpkins Help Make Halloween Food Allergy-Friendly
DRACUT (CBS) — One in thirteen kids has a potentially life-threatening food allergy, which can make Halloween downright frightening. But this year, there’s a way to tell which homes are safe for all kids: Teal pumpkins. Instead of carving, pumpkins, Joan Powers and her kids – 5-year-old Jack and 4-year-old Tessa of Dracut, are painting their pumpkins. Teal is the color of food allergy awareness, something the Powers family knows a lot about. Jack is allergic to synthetic food dye — anything that has a color with a number after it. Tessa is allergic to shellfish. There’s not much to worry about with a shel...

Peptide vaccines for cancer therapy.
Authors: Cerezo D, Pena MJ, Mijares M, Martinez G, Blanca I, De Sanctis JB Abstract For around four decades, vaccines of different kinds have been developed to treat different types of cancer. However, promising results encountered in the early phase contrasted with the results recorded in clinical studies. Recent discoveries in the vaccine field, adjuvants and delivery systems, and antigen presentation have lead to new patented approaches. The current review is focused on general description of peptide vaccines involving cancer antigen presentation, specific immune response, cell death dependent pathways, and targ...

Hsp70 in Cancer: Partner or Traitor to Immune System.
Abstract Heat shock protein 70.1 (Hsp70.1), also known as Hsp70, is a highly conserved member of the heat shock protein family that exists in all living organisms and determines the protein fate as molecular chaperones. Hsp70 basal expression is undetectable or low in most unstressed normal cells, however, its abundant presence in several types of human cancer cells is reported. Several studies support upregulated Hsp70 involved in tumor progression and drug resistance through modulation of cell death pathways and suppresses anticancer immune responses. However, numerous studies have confirmed that Hsp70 can also ...

Immunogenicity Evaluation of Recombinant Edible Vaccine Candidate Containing HER2-MUC1 against Breast Cancer.
In this study, Her2, MUC1, and a novel fusion structure were expressed in the seeds and hairy roots of transgenic plants appropriately. The mice groups were immunized either by feeding of transgenic seeds or hairy roots. All immunized groups showed a considerable rise in anti-glycoprotein serum IgG and IgA, and IFNɣ cytokine. However, the animals received chimeric protein showed significant higher immune responses in comparison to ones received one of these immunogen. The results indicated that the oral immunization of an animal model with transgenic plants could effectively elicit immune responses against two major tumo...

Optimized Dose of Dendritic Cell-based Vaccination in Experimental Model of Tumor Using Artificial Neural Network.
In this study, a mathematical model based on an artificial neural network (ANN) was used to predict several patterns and dosage of matured DC administration for improved vaccination. The ANN model predicted that repeated co-injection of tumor antigen (TA)-loaded DCs matured with CpG (CpG-DC) and LML (List-DC) results in improved antitumor immune response as well as a reduction of immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment. In the present study, we evaluated the ANN prediction accuracy about DC-based cancer vaccines pattern in the treatment of Wehi164 fibrosarcoma cancer-bearing mice. Our results showed that the admini...

Advances in pediatrics in 2014: current practices and challenges in allergy, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neonatology, nutrition, oncology and respiratory tract illnesses
Major advances in the conduct of pediatric practice have been reported in the Italian Journal of Pediatrics in 2014. This review highlights developments in allergy, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neonatology, nutrition, oncology and respiratory tract illnesses. Investigations endorse a need to better educate guardians and improve nutritional management in food allergy. Management of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates and of bronchiolitis have been improved by position statements of scientific societies. Novel treatments for infant colic and inflammatory bowel diseases have emerged. Studies suggest the diagnostic utilit...

Low Noncytotoxic Concentrations of 5-Fluorouracil Have No Adverse Effects on Maturation and Function of Bone Marrow-Derived Dendritic Cells in vitro: A Potentially Safe Adjuvant for Dendritic Cell-Based Cancer Therapy
Conclusions: These data suggest that low doses of 5-FU have no adverse effects on DC maturation and function, and the efficacy of DC-based cancer immunotherapy may be greatly enhanced by combining it with suboptimal doses of 5-FU.Int Arch Allergy Immunol 2015;168:122-130
