A National Cancer Database Analysis of Sinonasal Malignant Myoepithelial Carcinoma Outcomes
DISCUSSION: MECA of the sinonasal cavity is a rare tumor with poorly understood behavior. Data from the NCDB suggests that it is a relatively aggressive tumor with surgical management associated with better outcomes. This analysis is limited by the small sample size and further research into optimal treatment regimens is needed.PMID:35971225 | DOI:10.1177/19458924221121419

What to Know About the Latest Advances in Managing Severe Asthma
Graphs and charts don’t always tell the whole story. Numbers can be deceiving. But anyone who looks at U.S. trends in asthma mortality can see, without squinting, that things are moving in the right direction. A 2019 analysis in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that from 1999 to 2015, asthma mortality fell by 43%. “The decrease in asthma-related mortality was consistent in both sexes and in all race groups, with the largest decrease in patients older than 65 years,” the authors concluded. Figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the...

Correspondence to 'Hypersensitivity reactions with allopurinol and febuxostat: a study using the Medicare claims data
We read with great interest the article by Singh and Cleveland, which the authors reported that the observed hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) associated with allopurinol and febuxostat were not different.1 This conclusion differs from previous studies on HSRs associated with allopurinol and febuxostat using claimed data2 and intramural databases.3 The discrepancy may arise from different inclusion criteria for the diagnosis of HSRs based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) coding system, methods for identifying causative drugs, methods for stratification, as well as ethnicity of the involve...

Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine
When the opioid addiction crisis began to surge in the U.S. about a decade ago, Dr. Medhat Mikhael spent a lot of time talking to his patients about other ways to heal pain besides opioids, from other types of medications to alternative treatments. As a pain management specialist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., he didn’t anticipate leaving behind the short-term use of opioids altogether, since they work so well for post-surgical pain. But he wanted to recommend a remedy that was safer and still effective. That turned out to be acupuncture. “Like any treatment, acupuncture...

Medication Adherence in Medicare Enrolled Older Adults with Asthma Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic
CONCLUSION: Adherence to asthma controller medications significantly decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic among Medicare enrolled patients with asthma. Patients with markers for more severe asthma, overuse of albuterol, and a 90-day supply of controller medications were more likely to have high adherence. These findings can be used to identify opportunities to improve adherence and prescribing among adult patients with asthma.PMID:35227901 | PMC:PMC8873040 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2022.02.010
