With the Decongestant SNAFU, the FDA Tries Something New
It’s easy to understand how a medicine like phenylephrine got onto pharmacy shelves in the first place. The common decongestant, used most often as an ingredient in multidrug cold medications like DayQuil and Sudafed PE, was initially designated as “safe and effective” by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1976, when the agency was newly—and less stringently than today—greenlighting drugs that had been on the market for years before the agency had established any efficacy standards. These vaccines include those for prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), pneumococcal, and influenza, diseases that respiratory health professionals are most aware of, plus pertussis (in Tdap), herpes zoster (HZ, shingles), and as of May 3, 2023, respiratory syncytial viral, for which adults with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseas...

A qualitative investigation into vaccine hesitancy and confidence among people managing allergy
Vaccine hesitancy is multifactorial, and among atopic individuals, is exacerbated by documented, but rare, cases of allergic reactions to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines.1 –3 Furthermore, conflicting information regarding the safety of COVID-19 vaccines may have caused confusion among individuals with a history of severe allergies. We performed semistructured qualitative interviews to better understand how some adults and families managing allergy perceive vaccine m essaging and what influences their decisions to be vaccinated.
