Solvent-free sonication of blackberries for the anthocyanin enrichment of juices obtained by pressing
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Aug 25;95(suppl 1):e20221106. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320221106. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTAn ultrasound pretreatment was used to increase anthocyanins content in blackberry juice. Whole fruits were inserted into a glass vessel without contact with any solvent, sonicated in an ultrasonic bath, and then pressed with a manual juicer. The experimental design showed that 7 min at 65% of ultrasound amplitude increased the anthocyanin content in juices from 31 to 56% for BRS Xingu, Guarani, and Xavante cultivars. Two major anthocyanins, cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside were found in higher ...

The iconic cactus of the Caatinga dry forest, Cereus jamacaru (Cactaceae) has high sphingophily specialization and pollinator dependence
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Aug 28;95(suppl 1):e20220460. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320220460. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCereus jamacaru is a cactus distributed in Northeastern Brazil, with high symbolic value to this region. However, the interaction, behavior and the role of pollinators remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the reproductive biology, addressing the ecological significance of floral attributes, including details about floral signaling. The study was carried at three areas of the Caatinga, in 2015, 2017 and 2021. We analyzed the floral morphometry, volume and concentration of the nectar, and characteriz...

Enhancement of debitterness, water-solubility, and neuroprotective effects of naringin by transglucosylation
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Aug 29. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12709-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNaringin found in citrus fruits is a flavanone glycoside with numerous biological activities. However, the bitterness, low water-solubility, and low bioavailability of naringin are the main issues limiting its use in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. Herein, a glucansucrase from isolated Leuconostoc citreum NY87 was used for trans-α-glucosylattion of naringin by using sucrose as substrate. Two naringin glucosides (O-α-D-glucosyl-(1'''' → 6″) naringin (compound 1) and 4'-O-α-D-glucosyl naringin (compo...

Quality trait improvement in horticultural crops: OMICS and modern biotechnological approaches
Mol Biol Rep. 2023 Aug 29. doi: 10.1007/s11033-023-08728-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHorticultural crops are an essential part of food and nutritional security. Moreover, these form an integral part of the agricultural economy and have enormous economic potential. They are a rich source of nutrients that are beneficial to human health. Plant breeding of horticultural crops has focussed primarily on increasing the productivity and related traits of these crops. However, fruit and vegetable quality is paramount to their perishability, marketability, and consumer acceptance. The improved nutritional value is beneficial t...
