The Women in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Special Interest Group: What Can the Lessons of One Anesthesiology Affinity Group Tell Us About How to Build Impactful Professional Communities?
This article discusses the recent history of affinity organizations in anesthesiology, the benefits they offer professional organizations, and the strategies that have been used to effectively motivate change in professional communities. These strategies include engaging a strong advisory board, identifying the need of constituents, creating additional opportunities for networking and membership, addressing gaps in professional development, and aligning goals with those of the larger national organization. WICTA is just one example of the potential opportunities that affinity groups offer to professional societies and orga...

Post-Anaesthetic Herpetic Lesion following Extraction - A Case Report
Ann Maxillofac Surg. 2023 Jan-Jun;13(1):105-107. doi: 10.4103/ams.ams_210_22. Epub 2023 Jun 15.ABSTRACTRATIONALE: In Indian subcontinent, every adult may have suffered from chicken pox during their early childhood and harbour the virus, which eventually becomes inactive over years. These latent organisms can undergo sudden activation when triggered by injection of local anaesthesia in the oral cavity. Probably, some symptoms develop along the distribution of the nerve.PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we present a case report of a 55-year-old male patient who reported to us with post-anaesthetic herpetic lesion involving the face un...

Communicating medical information with Aboriginal patients: lessons learned from GPs and GP registrars in Aboriginal primary health care
CONCLUSIONS: This research provides initial insights for GPs in Aboriginal health, comparing experienced GPs with more than 10years experience to novices. However, further research involving Aboriginal patients is needed to validate GP strategies and understand their significance from the patients' perspective.PMID:37710389 | DOI:10.1071/PY23128

Case report of CT-guided lung biopsy complicated by air embolism
Undersea Hyperb Med. 2023 Third Quarter;50(3):273-281.ABSTRACTRATIONALE: Cerebral arterial air embolism is a rare but potentially fatal complication of computed tomography (CT) guided lung biopsy. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) is the first line of treatment for arterial gas embolism and needs to be administered immediately after the event. Early HBO2 can reduce the mortality rate of cerebrovascular air embolism.PATIENT CONCERNS: A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed with a pulmonary nodule with a diameter of approximately 0.8 cm in the right lower lung. The patient developed consciousness, convulsions, and arrhythmia after CT-guide...

C. C. Li and Quasi-Random Mating
Twin Res Hum Genet. 2023 Sep 14:1-3. doi: 10.1017/thg.2023.37. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA simple model by which Hardy-Weinberg proportions are attained in a single generation while maintaining gene frequencies is stated and illustrated. The title 'Quasi-random mating' is proposed. Confusion about the Hardy-Weinberg principle can be avoided only if there is clear separation between the basic deterministic model and factors influencing a population's structure. Eighty years passed before C. C. Li coined the term 'pseudo-random mating'. The lesson taught by Li has not been taken on board.PMID:37706311 | DOI:10.1017/thg.2023.37
