The Role of Ultrasound in the Management of Ankle Sprains and a Clinically Relevant Geisinger Ankle Sprain Sports Ultrasound Protocol
This article proposes a comprehensive, evidence-based diagnostic ankle ultrasound protocol to implement in conjunction with thorough history and physical examination. We also review the current literature to describe where this protocol most improves diagnostic accuracy compared with physical examination alone.PMID:37678351 | DOI:10.1249/JSR.0000000000001105

Current and Emerging Applications of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation
Am J Nurs. 2023 Sep 7;Published Ahead of Print. doi: 10.1097/01.NAJ.0000978920.88346.77. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a life-changing treatment for people with recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). Frequently acquired in the hospital, CDI can cause serious gastrointestinal symptoms, including persistent watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, and severe dehydration. Antibiotics, the primary treatment, can unfortunately disrupt the gut microbiome and lead to antimicrobial resistance. FMT involves introducing stool from a healthy donor into the affected recipient to strength...

Frozen Shoulder: Diagnosis and Management
Curr Sports Med Rep. 2023 Sep 1;22(9):307-312. doi: 10.1249/JSR.0000000000001097.ABSTRACTFrozen shoulder is a common condition that causes pain and restriction of movement of the shoulder unrelated to secondary causes. It has three classic phases (freezing, frozen, and thawing), and is resolved in most cases within 1 to 2 years. Diagnosis is clinical based on global motion restriction and pain. Imaging plays an ancillary role to narrow the differential diagnosis. Physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, and injection therapies are standard treatments, although none have been shown to alter the long-term course o...

Nonpharmacologic Pain Management for Patients in Ambulatory Extended Recovery After Minimally Invasive Gynecologic and Urologic Surgery
This study focused on patients recovering from minimally invasive gynecologic and urologic surgery at a comprehensive cancer center. The first cohort consisted of patients three months preimplementation (n = 96) and the second consisted of those three months postimplementation (n = 86).METHODOLOGIC APPROACH: The project used a pre- and postintervention design and deployed the bundle as a nursing order. Nurses and patients were educated about the bundle and comprehensive postoperation pain management strategies.FINDINGS: Postimplementation, the documented use of nonpharmacologic pain management interventions significantly i...

Living liver donor pain management
Curr Opin Organ Transplant. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1097/MOT.0000000000001099. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optimal pain control in living liver donors undergoing hepatectomy is strongly recommended considering their unique status as healthy individuals willingly undergoing surgery for the benefit of the recipient. This review aims to examine and evaluate different strategies aimed at ensuring effective postoperative pain management in living liver donors.RECENT FINDINGS: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have proven effective in optimizing patient outcomes, including in living liver donor he...
