3 Advanced Search Techniques for Writing In-Depth Articles
For business people and professionals, writing an in-depth article is a great way to be seen as an authority on your subject. But how do you go about finding new and important information? Instead of the same top ten search results, there is a better way to get more relevant data. When I was a kid and had to do a report for class, I was always amazed how so many of the students came up with the same basic information. Years later, I realized it was because our parents had all bought us the same encyclopedias. The same goes today. Most people will just do a basic Google search and look for links on the first page. Unfortuna...

Effectiveness of job search interventions: A meta-analytic review.
The current meta-analytic review examined the effectiveness of job search interventions in facilitating job search success (i.e., obtaining employment). Major theoretical perspectives on job search interventions, including behavioral learning theory, theory of planned behavior, social cognitive theory, and coping theory, were reviewed and integrated to derive a taxonomy of critical job search intervention components. Summarizing the data from 47 experimentally or quasi-experimentally evaluated job search interventions, we found that the odds of obtaining employment were 2.67 times higher for job seekers participating in jo...

Self-regulation during job search: The opposing effects of employment self-efficacy and job search behavior self-efficacy.
Adopting a self-regulatory perspective, the current study examined the within-person relationships among job search cognitions, job search behaviors, and job search success (i.e., number of job offers received). Specifically, conceptualizing job search behaviors as guided by a hierarchy of means-end (i.e., job search behavior-employment) goal structure, we differentiated employment self-efficacy from job search behavior self-efficacy. Our results showed that higher levels of perceived job search progress could lead to more frequent job search behaviors through enhancing job search behavior self-efficacy. However, higher le...

Identifying search terms
For any literature search, you will need to identify your search terms.  What words or phrases are you going to search for?   What thesaurus terms are you going to choose? If you are doing a detailed search for evidence for a systematic review, or doing a systematic search for some other reason, identification of search terms will include identification of synonyms, that is, alternative terms for the concept you are interested in.Here are some possible ways to identify thesaurus and free text terms, and synonyms.  Scoping searchUse a PICO grid or similar to identify the search concepts, and search for those....

How visual search relates to visual diagnostic performance: a narrative systematic review of eye-tracking research in radiology
Abstract Eye tracking research has been conducted for decades to gain understanding of visual diagnosis such as in radiology. For educational purposes, it is important to identify visual search patterns that are related to high perceptual performance and to identify effective teaching strategies. This review of eye-tracking literature in the radiology domain aims to identify visual search patterns associated with high perceptual performance. Databases PubMed, EMBASE, ERIC, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science were searched using ‘visual perception’ OR ‘eye tracking’ AND ‘radiology’ and synonyms. Two aut...

The Three-Dimensional Job Search
When most nurse job-seekers are in the market for a new nursing position, their job search process can be somewhat one-dimensional. From my perspective, a three-dimensional job search strategy is generally much more effective. And when it comes to career development, it ' s the same thing. One-dimensionsality breeds one-dimensional results -- why not try something more powerful? The One-Dimensional Job SearchIn a one-dimensional job search process, it kind of looks like this: you get up in the morning, make a cup of coffee, eat breakfast, and open your computer. You then peruse job boards like Indeed and Monster looking for...

Use of a search summary table to improve systematic review search methods, results, and efficiency.
Conclusions: Publishing a search summary table in all systematic reviews would add to the growing evidence base about information retrieval, which would help in determining which databases to search for which type of review (in terms of either topic or scope), what supplementary search methods are most effective, what type of literature is being included, and where it is found. It would also provide evidence for future searching and search methods research. PMID: 33424470 [PubMed - in process]

What to use instead of NICE Evidence Search - a first thought
I have been promoting NICE Evidence Search much more systematically this year to " my " first year undergraduates in their first library session.  It is also on the resource lists I ' ve made for each of their courses.  I like the idea that there is one source, where all the results have been evaluated by health information professionals, and I ' ve suggested it ' s a good first place to search for any health topic.  But NICE Evidence Search is closing at the end of March 2022.  So what to use instead?NICE Evidence Search has two lists of sources, one of sites where some of the content is...

The development of organized visual search.
Abstract Visual search plays an important role in guiding behavior. Children have more difficulty performing conjunction search tasks than adults. The present research evaluates whether developmental differences in children's ability to organize serial visual search (i.e., search organization skills) contribute to performance limitations in a typical conjunction search task. We evaluated 134 children between the ages of 2 and 17 on separate tasks measuring search for targets defined by a conjunction of features or by distinct features. Our results demonstrated that children organize their visual search better as t...

A study of the influence of task familiarity on user behaviors and performance with a MeSH term suggestion interface for PubMed bibliographic search
Conclusions: Results indicate that there is a selective compatibility between search familiarity and search interface. One implication of the research for system evaluation is the importance of taking into consideration task familiarity when assessing the effectiveness of interactive IR systems.

Social Media in Clinical Practice: Chapter 2, Medical Search Engines and Google
When I realized Springer made the individual chapters of my book, Social Media in Clinical Practice, available, I thought it would be useful for future readers to get some insights about each chapter one by one. Here is the short summary of what you can read about, and an excerpt of the second chapter, Using Medical Search Engines with a Special Focus on Google: There are billions of pages on the World Wide Web and search engines help us find the information we are looking for. Having so many pages with a huge amount of information online is the biggest advantage and disadvantage of the Internet at the same time. Inste...

Parietal blood oxygenation level‐dependent response evoked by covert visual search reflects set‐size effect in monkeys
Abstract Distinguishing a target from distractors during visual search is crucial for goal‐directed behaviour. The more distractors that are presented with the target, the larger is the subject's error rate. This observation defines the set‐size effect in visual search. Neurons in areas related to attention and eye movements, like the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) and frontal eye field (FEF), diminish their firing rates when the number of distractors increases, in line with the behavioural set‐size effect. Furthermore, human imaging studies that have tried to delineate cortical areas modulating their blood oxygena...

Systematic literature search in PubMed : A short introduction.
Abstract In order to identify current (and relevant) evidence for a specific clinical question within the unmanageable amount of information available, solid skills in performing a systematic literature search are essential. An efficient approach is to search a biomedical database containing relevant literature citations of study reports. The best known database is MEDLINE, which is searchable for free via the PubMed interface. In this article, we explain step by step how to perform a systematic literature search via PubMed by means of an example research question in the field of ophthalmology. First, we demon...
