Use of a search summary table to improve systematic review search methods, results, and efficiency
CONCLUSIONS: Publishing a search summary table in all systematic reviews would add to the growing evidence base about information retrieval, which would help in determining which databases to search for which type of review (in terms of either topic or scope), what supplementary search methods are most effective, what type of literature is being included, and where it is found. It would also provide evidence for future searching and search methods research.PMID:33424470 | PMC:PMC7772975 | DOI:10.5195/jmla.2021.809

Enhancing biomedical search interfaces with images
We describe a search system for biomedical documents that leverages image modalities and an existing index server. We integrate a problem-specific taxonomy of image modalities and image-based data into a custom search system. Our solution features a front-end interface to enhance classical document search results with image-related data, including page thumbnails, figures, captions and image-modality information. We demonstrate the system on a subset of the CORD-19 document collection. A quantitative evaluation demonstrates higher precision and recall for biomedical document retrieval. A qualitative evaluation with domain ...

PHR-search: a search framework for protein remote homology detection based on the predicted protein hierarchical relationships
Brief Bioinform. 2022 Feb 2:bbab609. doi: 10.1093/bib/bbab609. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProtein remote homology detection is one of the most fundamental research tool for protein structure and function prediction. Most search methods for protein remote homology detection are evaluated based on the Structural Classification of Proteins-extended (SCOPe) benchmark, but the diverse hierarchical structure relationships between the query protein and candidate proteins are ignored by these methods. In order to further improve the predictive performance for protein remote homology detection, a search framework based on the pr...

Using eye-controlled highlighting techniques to support both serial and parallel processing in visual search
Appl Ergon. 2021 Jul 11;97:103522. doi: 10.1016/j.apergo.2021.103522. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent research has developed two eye-controlled highlighting techniques, namely, block highlight display (BHD) and single highlight display (SHD), that enhance information presentation based on a user's current gaze position. The present research aimed to investigate how these techniques facilitate mental processing of users' visual search in high information-density visual environments. In Experiment 1, 60 participants performed 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-icon visual search tasks. The search times significantly increased as the nu...

Shoulder Surgery Google Search Trends during the COVID-19 Pandemic
J Surg Orthop Adv. 2023 Spring;32(1):14-16.ABSTRACTThe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has strained many healthcare systems. Google Trends is a tool that provides information on online interest in selected keywords and topics over time. The purpose of this study is to describe the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on online interest in elective shoulder pathology. Online search pattern data were obtained via Google Trends from November 2019 to November 2020 using the search terms 'orthopedic surgery' and 'shoulder pathology' search terms. Relative search volume index (SVI) graphs were generated from this data an...

Dr. Epstein, Political Bias, & Google Search Results
I’m a little confused by claims made by Dr. Robert Epstein and his assertion, based upon a single study of 95 participants, that Google somehow intentionally biased the results shown before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. And therefore, likely impacted the election results itself. That’s a huge assertion to make. One would hope that an esteemed researcher such as Dr. Epstein would have the scientific data to back it up. Unfortunately, I don’t see it. Science is only objective up until the point where a scientist acknowledges and accounts for her or his own biases. Science is not based on a preset ag...

An Overview of How to Search and Write a Medical Literature Review
Respir Care. 2023 Jun 20:respcare.11198. doi: 10.4187/respcare.11198. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWithout a literature review, there can be no research project. Literature reviews are necessary to learn what is known (and not known) about a topic of interest. In the respiratory care profession, the body of research is enormous, so a method to search the medical literature efficiently is needed. Selecting the correct databases, use of Boolean logic operators, and consultations with librarians are used to optimize searches. For a narrow and precise search, use PubMed, MEDLINE, Ovid, EBSCO, the Cochrane Library, or Google S...

A study on pubmed search tag usage pattern: association rule mining of a full-day pubmed query log
Conclusions: The low percentage of search tag usage implies that PubMed/MEDLINE users do not utilize the features of PubMed/MEDLINE widely or they are not aware of such features or solely depend on the high recall focused query translation by the PubMed's Automatic Term Mapping. The users need further education and interactive search application for effective use of the search tags in order to fulfill their biomedical information needs from PubMed/MEDLINE.
