Current status of infectious diseases among migrants and non-citizens in Malaysia
Trop Biomed. 2023 Jun 1;40(2):138-151. doi: 10.47665/tb.40.2.003.ABSTRACTThe mass movement of migrants to Malaysia for employment is one of the factors contributing to the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases in this country. Despite mandatory health screening for migrants seeking employment, prevalence records of infectious diseases amongst migrant populations in Malaysia are still within negligible proportions. Therefore, the present review highlights the incidence, mortality and overall status of infectious diseases amongst migrants' populations in Malaysia, which maybe be useful for impeding exacerbation o...

Molecular identification of phlebotomine sand flies and the harbored Leishmania spp. in Sokoto State, Nigeria
DiscussionPhlebotomus papatasi and four species belonging to the genus Sergentomyia are the most prevalent sand flies in Sokoto State, Nigeria and they harbor L. infantum solely. The results shed light on why visceral leishmaniasis is the most predominant form of the disease. Therefore, we recommend that adequate care for dogs must be instituted as dogs are the major animal reservoir for L. infantum.

Nudges, regulations, and behavioral public choice
Behav Brain Sci. 2023 Aug 30;46:e164. doi: 10.1017/S0140525X23000857.ABSTRACTChater & Loewenstein have done a service to the field by raising the fundamental issue of how the political process distorts well-intentioned efforts at behavioral public policy. We connect this argument to broader research on government failure, particularly public choice theory in economics. We further suggest ways that behavioral research can help identify and mitigate such failures.PMID:37646282 | DOI:10.1017/S0140525X23000857

Optimal forest management for carbon sequestration, timber, and bioenergy production in Vietnam using an extended full-cycle carbon accounting method
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29439-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing an extended full-cycle carbon model from the Faustmann framework, which allows for management strategies of several uses concurrently implemented in the same area of forest, this paper investigates the selection of management objectives that are beneficial and optimal for forest plantations in Vietnam. Three scenarios are considered: Scenario 1 investigates the management objective of maximizing the land economic value (LEV) of timber as a single production. Scenario 2 investigates the joint production of timber an...

Emerging micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems and nanotechnology-based removal alternatives: A review
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 28:139945. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139945. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a significant concern about the accessibility of uncontaminated and safe drinking water, a fundamental necessity for human beings. This concern is attributed to the toxic micropollutants from several emission sources, including industrial toxins, agricultural runoff, wastewater discharges, sewer overflows, landfills, algal blooms and microbiota. Emerging micropollutants (EM) encompass a broad spectrum of compounds, including pharmaceutically active chemicals, personal care products, pesticides, industrial chemica...

Development of the Canadian Eating Practices Screener to assess eating practices based on 2019 Canada's Food Guide recommendations
The objective of this study was to develop a brief self-administered screener to assess eating practices recommended in the 2019-CFG among adults aged 18-65 years. Development of the screener items was informed by a review of existing tools and mapping of items onto 2019-CFG recommendations. Face and content validity were assessed with experts in public health nutrition and/or dietary assessment (n = 16) and individuals from Government of Canada (n=14). Cognitive interviews were conducted with English-speaking (n=16) and French-speaking (n=16) adults living in Canada to assess face validity and understanding of the screene...
