National dengue surveillance, Cambodia 2002-2020
We report that while dengue case morbidity and mortality rates in Cambodia fell between 2002 and 2020, dengue incidence doubled and age at infection increased. Future national surveillance, disease prevention and treatment, and vector control policies will have to account for these changes to optimize disease control.PMID:37638355 | PMC:PMC10452936 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.23.289713

Lessons in aging from Myc knockout mouse models
Front Cell Dev Biol. 2023 Aug 9;11:1244321. doi: 10.3389/fcell.2023.1244321. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTDespite MYC being among the most intensively studied oncogenes, its role in normal development has not been determined as Myc-/- mice do not survival beyond mid-gestation. Myc ± mice live longer than their wild-type counterparts and are slower to accumulate many age-related phenotypes. However, Myc haplo-insufficiency likely conceals other important phenotypes as many high-affinity Myc targets genes continue to be regulated normally. By delaying Myc inactivation until after birth it has recently been possible to study the...

One Man ’ s Quest to Heal the Oceans —And Maybe Save the World
Enric Sala—marine ecologist, conservationist, and ocean advocate—is standing under a life-size replica of a Northern Atlantic Right Whale at the natural history museum in Washington, D.C., and the air outside is smudged with wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada. It’s not surprising that Sala wants to talk about the smoke, or about whales. Their poop, however, is an unexpected twist. According to Sala, whale excrement, or, more precisely, the lack of it, has a role to play in the choking miasma that has forced my interview with one of the world’s foremost ocean explorers indoors instead of out on...

COVID-19 vaccination likelihood among federally qualified health center patients: Lessons learned for future health crises
CONCLUSIONS: During initial COVID-19 vaccination rollout, trust in healthcare providers and government sources of COVID-19 information was associated with likelihood to vaccinate in FQHC patients. To inform public health planning for future crises, we highlight lessons learned for translating community-relevant insights into direct action to reach those most impacted.PMID:37619894 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.07.013

What are the evidence bases for developing models of rehabilitation for older people with mental illness in Australia?
CONCLUSIONS: There is sufficient evidence to guide development of models of rehabilitation with older people, but innovation and evaluation are essential if older people are to have equal opportunities in their recovery journeys.PMID:37615592 | DOI:10.1177/10398562231190831

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with epilepsy and epilepsy specialists
CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed PWE to harmful consequences mainly due to medical shortages and worse life states. During the pandemic, there were delays in the diagnosis of PWE, and doctors' prescription habits changed. We must consider the lessons learned during this period of social restrictions and employ recent technological advances to improve treatment for PWE.PMID:37619465 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109389

Delivering Acupuncture Therapy in an Interdisciplinary Global Health Setting in Guatemala: Pilot Study and Lessons Learned
CONCLUSIONS: Reporting high symptom burdens, most patients were unfamiliar with AT. AT ceased when the licensed acupuncturist contracted COVID. Patients will be followed in 2023 and AT will be given to collect data on feasibility, satisfaction, and possible implementation.PMID:37609548 | PMC:PMC10440642 | DOI:10.1089/acu.2023.0023

Temporal and spatial changes of water quality in intensively developed urban rivers and water environment improvement: a case study of the Longgang River in Shenzhen, China
This study aims to reveal the water environment improvement process of intensively developed urban rivers, elucidate the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of major pollutants, and provide recommendations for their water environment management. Water quality data from eight monitoring sites (2007-2020) in the Longgang River basin in Shenzhen, China, and comprehensive pollution index method (CPI), modified comprehensive pollution index method (M-CPI), and Pearson correlation analysis method were used for comprehensive analysis. The study shows that TN, TP, NH3-N, and COD have the greatest influence on the wat...

COVID-19 public health surveillance and response in Taiwan: From containment to mitigation
J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Aug 21:S0929-6646(23)00330-3. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.08.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTaiwan learned from its 2003 SARS experience and established multiple surveillance systems to be able to detect and respond to COVID-19. With the find, test, trace, isolate, and support (FTTIS) strategy, Taiwan was successful in containing SARS-CoV-2 from spreading for two years. During the surge of the Omicron variant in the community, COVID-19 control strategy shifted from containment to mitigation in April 2022, to reduce morbidity and mortality. Lessons learned from COVID-19 response re-emphasizes the i...
