A Case of Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus in a Recently Transplanted Renal Patient
Cureus. 2023 Jun 24;15(6):e40899. doi: 10.7759/cureus.40899. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTHerpes Zoster Ophthalmicus (HZO) is a common manifestation of the reactivated Varicella Zoster virus, primarily affecting the eye and trigeminal nerve. This case study presents the clinical course of a 51-year-old male who underwent a renal transplant due to end-stage renal disease, further complicating the management of HZO. The patient's medical history also includes hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease (CKD), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and retinal detachment. Upon examination, the diagnosis of HZO was...

Transplant of Kidneys From Hepatitis C Virus-Positive Donors To Hepatitis C Virus-Negative Recipients: A Retrospective Study and Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Our study further confirms that kidney transplant from hepatitis C virus-positive donors to hepatitis C virus-negative recipients is safe and feasible with direct-acting antiviral treatment. Grafts from hepatitis C virus-infected donors may be effective to resolve the problem of kidney shortage.PMID:36718006 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2022.0315

Identifying < em > RBBP7 < /em > as a Promising Diagnostic Biomarker for BK Virus-Associated Nephropathy
In conclusion, we identified and verified RBBP7 as a molecular biomarker for BKVN diagnosis, which demonstrated great distinguishing ability with allograft rejection and would support clinical decision-making.PMID:35958876 | PMC:PMC9357817 | DOI:10.1155/2022/6934744

Feasibility of Convalescent Plasma Therapy in Kidney Transplant Recipients With Severe COVID-19: A Single-Center Prospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Convalescent plasma therapy is highly safe and clinically feasible and reduces mortality in kidney transplant recipients with severe COVID-19. Larger clinical registries and randomized clinical trials should be conducted to further explore the clinical outcomes associated with convalescent plasma use in kidney transplant recipients with severe COVID-19.PMID:33605203 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2020.0479

Metabolism of Direct-Acting Antiviral Agents (DAAs) in Hepatitis C Therapy: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSION: Despite its complex pharmacokinetics and possibility of drug drug interactions, direct-acting antivirals extremely high efficacy in providing viral clearance is an obvious advantage compared to possible interactions or side effects. They should be administered cautiously in patients with other comorbidities, and with a tight control of immunosuppressive therapy. PMID: 33319667 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association Between Polymorphisms in Cytokine Gene and Viral Infections in Renal and Liver Transplant Recipients: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSIONS: Cytokine gene polymorphisms IL-12B and IL-1B were found to be associated with an increased risk of infection in kidney transplants and IL-28B in liver transplant recipients. However, the small number and heterogeneity of studies limits the generalization of our results. Further research may lead to finding these associations in larger studies which perhaps improve the use of genetic testing and targeted antiviral therapy. This will further reduce the risk of viral infections associated with cytokine gene polymorphisms in post renal and liver transplant recipients. PMID: 32365304 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Treatment for hepatitis C virus-associated mixed cryoglobulinaemia.
CONCLUSIONS: To treat HCV-associated mixed cryoglobulinaemia, it may be beneficial to eliminate HCV infection by using antiviral treatment and to stop the immune response by using rituximab. For skin vasculitis and for some laboratory findings, it may be appropriate to combine antiviral treatment with deletion of B-cell clonal expansions by using of rituximab. The applicability of evidence reviewed here is limited by the absence of any studies with direct-acting antivirals, which are urgently needed to guide therapy.
