Disseminated vaccine-induced varicella infection in a kidney transplant recipient
Am J Transplant. 2023 Jun 5:S1600-6135(23)00522-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ajt.2023.05.034. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 33-year-old kidney transplant (KT) recipient presented with a disseminated pruritic, painful, vesicular rash and hepatitis three weeks after receiving a varicella vaccine (VAR). A skin lesion biopsy sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for genotyping confirmed vaccine-strain varicella-zoster virus (VZV) (Oka strain; vOka). The patient was successfully treated with intravenous acyclovir during a prolonged hospital stay. This case supports the contraindication of VAR in adult KT recipient...

Hepatitis A seroprevalence among special populations in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area, Brazil
The objectives were to estimate hepatitis A virus seroprevalence in subjects attending to a travel medicine and immunization clinic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and to develop a prediction model for hepatitis A virus seroprevalence. This retrospective research included individuals sequentially from April 2011 to June 2019 at a travel medicine and special population immunization clinic with an anti-hepatitis A virus IgG chemiluminescence result. Participants' data were verified via electronic medical records. Data were split into development and validation set taking 2018 as the date break. A cross-validated elastic generaliz...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Stem cells as an ideal carrier for gene therapy: A new approach to the treatment of hepatitis C virus
CONCLUSION: Gene therapy, either directly and in vivo or indirectly and in vitro, requires carriers (vectors) to transfer the gene. These carriers are divided into two groups, viral and non-viral. In indirect gene therapy, living cells are isolated from a person's body and genetically modified. Stem cells have the properties to transfer the desired genes to the patient's body, including the ability to proliferate for a long time and differentiate into the tissue cells in which they are located.PMID:36150664 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2022.101721

Donor-Derived Infections: Monitoring of Posttransplant Infections and Safety Lessons From the Opioid Epidemic
CONCLUSIONS: Organ transplant from donors meeting donor risk criteria for disease transmission can be performed safely with appropriate informed consent and rigorous pre- and posttransplant microbiological testing. Enhanced compliance with vaccination for hepatitis B virus should be tracked. New sequencing technologies developed for investigation of undiagnosed infections and in xenotransplantation may inform future directions for donor screening. Such tools may increase the safe utilization of organs from donors who have potential risk for transmission of infection to recipients.PMID:36018015 | DOI:10.6002/ect.DonorSymp.2022.L17

Conclusion: These assays are suitable for routine diagnostic. The UltraFast NextGenPCR is the fastest with average time (30mins), followed by Agilent (2 hrs) and MassArray (6hrs). Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to examine, measure and compare results from different assays for SARS detection, evaluate and diagnose accurately, as well as being able to plan, organize and recommend a diagnostic procedure for diagnostic laboratory. Key words: SARS-CoV-2, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, limit of detection, quantification cycle, COVID-19, in vitro diagnostic tests, Agilent, Massarray, Ultrafast. [20] From t...
