Identification of catalytically active domain epitopes in neuraminidase protein of H9N2 subtype of avian influenza virus
In this study, a truncated NA gene (205-900 bp) was cloned from the NA sequence of H9N2 strain, and then expressed using pET-28a (+) vector. This purified recombinant NA protein was used to immunize BALB/c mice, and the monoclonal antibodies were screened through the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Next, eight prokaryotic expression vectors were constructed for epitope identification. After cell fusion, three hybridoma cell lines producing the antibodies special to NA protein were screened by ELISA, western blotting, and indirect immunofluorescence; these were named 1B10, 2B6, and 5B2, respectively. Epi...

Safety signal identification for COVID-19 bivalent booster vaccination using tree-based scan statistics in the Vaccine Safety Datalink
CONCLUSIONS: For Pfizer-BioNTech only, we detected clusters of: (1) unspecified adverse effects, as have been observed in other vaccine studies using this method, and (2) respiratory disease toward the end of follow-up. The respiratory clusters were likely due to overlap of follow-up with the spread of respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and COVID-19, i.e., confounding by seasonality. The untargeted nature of the method and its inherent adjustment for the many diagnoses and risk intervals evaluated are unique advantages. Limitations include susceptibility to time-varying confounding, lower statistical power for assessi...

The disappearance of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza viruses in children during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic - are non-pharmaceutical interventions as effective as vaccines?
CONCLUSIONS: Influenza and RSV viruses disappeared during the pandemic period and rhinovirus was the second most common virus after the CoVs during and after the restriction period. Non-pharmaceutical interventions should be established as a precaution to prevent infectious diseases even after the pandemic.PMID:37140326 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202304_32178

Prevalence of influenza-specific vaccination hesitancy among adults in the United States, 2018
CONCLUSIONS: Among the four IVH beliefs studied, being hesitant to receiving influenza vaccination followed by mistrust of healthcare providers were identified as the most influential hesitancy beliefs. Two in five adults in the United States were hesitant to receive an influenza vaccination, and hesitancy was negatively associated with vaccination. This information may assist with targeted interventions, personalized to the individual, to reduce hesitancy and thus improve influenza vaccination acceptance.PMID:36907734 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.03.008

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Epidemiology and molecular characterization of avian influenza virus in backyard poultry of Chattogram, Bangladesh
Infect Genet Evol. 2022 Oct 8:105377. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2022.105377. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDucks, the natural reservoir of avian influenza virus (AIV), act as reassortment vessels for HPAI and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus for domestic and wild bird species. In Bangladesh, earlier research was mainly focused on AIV in commercial poultry and live bird markets, where there is scanty literature reported on AIV in apparently healthy backyard poultry at the household level. The present cross-sectional study was carried out to reveal the genomic epidemiology of AIV of backyard poultry in coastal (Anowar...
