Efficacy of adenotonsillectomy on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and related outcomes: A narrative review of current evidence
J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Sep 15:S0929-6646(23)00348-0. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.09.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review summarizes the current evidence in systematic reviews, meta-analysis and randomized controlled trials regarding adenotonsillectomy outcomes in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Adenotonsillectomy is effective in treating OSA in children without co-morbidities, despite postoperative residual OSA remained in roughly half of these children. For children with comorbidities such as Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, sickle cell disease, or cerebral palsy, adenotonsillectomy is less effectiv...

Left pneumonectomy for intrapulmonary unicentric Castleman disease
We present the case of a symptomless, 15-year-old female patient with left-sided tumor mass. Transthoracal invasive tissue biopsy confirmed Castleman disease. The central mass involved the main structures in the left hilus and therefore left pulmonectomy was necessary to reach the complete, tumor-free resection margins. The patient had no local or distant relapse during the 7-year follow-up. Although Castleman disease treated by complete surgical resection provides excellent results, radical and extended lung resection is sometimes inevitable to reach tumor-free margins. Epidemiological characteristics of centenarian deaths in China during 2013-2020: A trend and subnational analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Unlike other countries, centenarian deaths in China are characterized by a higher proportion of home and heart disease deaths, and this death pattern differs across provinces.PMID:37718285 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002823

Prognostic and clinical value of circPRKCI expression in diverse human cancers
CONCLUSION: Elevated circPRKCI expression was correlated with worse OS and unfavorable clinical features, suggesting a novel prognostic and predictive role of circPRKCI in diverse human cancers.PMID:37718264 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002844

Knockdown of TXNDC5 alleviates CCL4-induced hepatic fibrosis in mice by enhancing endoplasmic reticulum stress
CONCLUSIONS: Knockdown of TXNDC5 may reduce hepatic fibrosis by regulating ERs, and targeting TXNDC5 seems to be a candidate treatment for hepatic fibrosis.PMID:37716602 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.08.016

Prolonged course of eravacycline leading to acute pancreatitis
We describe a 46-year-old male who received eravacycline for treatment of a perirectal abscess. While the patient had slightly elevated lipase levels at baseline post-cardiopulmonary arrest, he developed abdominal pain and a further increase in lipase levels following 10 days of eravacycline, consistent with pancreatitis. Based on the Naranjo adverse drug reaction probability scale, eravacycline was the probable etiology of acute pancreatitis given improvement immediately after discontinuation. Clinicians should be aware of this potential adverse effect of eravacycline and should not initiate eravacycline in those with ris...

Association of psoriasis and stroke in end-stage renal disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to prior research in the general population, psoriasis in ESRD patients was not associated with the risk of stroke after controlling for various demographic and clinical parameters. Our finding emphasizes the importance of controlling for a variety of factors in population studies examining associations of diseases and risk factors.PMID:37716600 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.014
