How visual search relates to visual diagnostic performance: a narrative systematic review of eye-tracking research in radiology
Abstract Eye tracking research has been conducted for decades to gain understanding of visual diagnosis such as in radiology. For educational purposes, it is important to identify visual search patterns that are related to high perceptual performance and to identify effective teaching strategies. This review of eye-tracking literature in the radiology domain aims to identify visual search patterns associated with high perceptual performance. Databases PubMed, EMBASE, ERIC, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science were searched using ‘visual perception’ OR ‘eye tracking’ AND ‘radiology’ and synonyms. Two aut...

Combining gradient ascent search and support vector machines for effective autofocus of a field emission–scanning electron microscope
Summary Autofocus is an important issue in electron microscopy, particularly at high magnification. It consists in searching for sharp image of a specimen, that is corresponding to the peak of focus. The paper presents a machine learning solution to this issue. From seven focus measures, support vector machines fitting is used to compute the peak with an initial guess obtained from a gradient ascent search, that is search in the direction of higher gradient of focus. The solution is implemented on a Carl Zeiss Auriga FE‐SEM with a three benchmark specimen and magnification ranging from x300 to x160 000. Based on regulari...

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence - podcast
The most intensive ever search for alien lifeThis week it was revealed that astronomers are about to start the most intensive ever search for alien life. The Breakthrough Listen project will scan stars in 100 galaxies for radio and optical signatures that indicate someone, or something, is out there.Until now, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence - or SETI - has been met with an eerie silence. What makes scientists so convinced it's worthwhile looking for alien life? Continue reading...

Do American States with More Religious or Conservative Populations Search More for Sexual Content on Google?
We examined associations between state-level religiosity/conservatism and anonymized interest in searching for sexual content online using Google Trends (which calculates within-state search volumes for search terms). Across two separate years, and controlling for demographic variables, we observed moderate-to-large positive associations between: (1) greater proportions of state-level religiosity and general web searching for sexual content and (2) greater proportions of state-level conservatism and image-specific searching for sex. These findings were interpreted in terms of the paradoxical hypothesis that a greater prepo...

The relationship between the subjective experience of real-world cognitive failures and objective target-detection performance in visual search
Cognition. 2021 Sep 27;217:104914. doi: 10.1016/j.cognition.2021.104914. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVisual search is a common occurrence in everyday life, such as searching for the location of keys, identifying a friend in a crowd, or scanning an upcoming intersection for hazards while driving. Visual search is also used in professional contexts, such as medical diagnostic imaging and airport baggage screening. These contexts are often characterised by low-prevalence or rare targets. Here we tested whether individual differences in the detection of targets in visual search could be predicted from variables derived from ...

Pseudoneglect during object search in naturalistic scenes
Exp Brain Res. 2023 Aug 23. doi: 10.1007/s00221-023-06679-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPseudoneglect, that is the tendency to pay more attention to the left side of space, is typically assessed with paper-and-pencil tasks, particularly line bisection. In the present study, we used an everyday task with more complex stimuli. Subjects' task was to look for pre-specified objects in images of real-world scenes. In half of the scenes, the search object was located on the left side of the image (L-target); in the other half of the scenes, the target was on the right side (R-target). To control for left-right differences in t...

5 Unconventional Google Search Tips for Power Searching
If you Google [google search tips], you're bound to find plenty of articles that explain several ways you can improve your search techniques. They may even entice you with the promise of turning you into a Google power searcher. The problem with most of these articles is that most of the tips they offer are copied straight from Google's Inside Search blog or any number of Google for Dummies-type books. Now I'm not saying that those articles don't serve a purpose. There's always novice internet users out there who don't know about Inside Search or who don't want to take the time to wade through an entire book. There's also expe...

Co-designing Community Out-of-hours Palliative Care Services: A systematic literature search and review
CONCLUSION: Incorporating patients, families and carers priorities and preferences in the planning and designing of out-of-hours palliative care service is needed for service providers to deliver care that is more patient-centred. Adopting the principles of co-design may improve how out-of-hours care scan be delivered.PMID:36349547 | DOI:10.1177/02692163221132089

Top-Down but Not Bottom-Up Visual Scanning is Affected in Hereditary Pure Cerebellar Ataxia
by Shunichi Matsuda, Hideyuki Matsumoto, Toshiaki Furubayashi, Hideki Fukuda, Masaki Emoto, Ritsuko Hanajima, Shoji Tsuji, Yoshikazu Ugawa, Yasuo Terao The aim of this study was to clarify the nature of visual processing deficits caused by cerebellar disorders. We studied the performance of two types of visual search (top-down visual scanning and bottom-up visual scanning) in 18 patients with pure cerebellar types of spinocerebellar degeneration (SCA6: 11; SCA31: 7). The gaze fixation position was recorded with an eye-tracking device while the subjects performed two visual search tasks in which they looked for a target La...
