Thoracic outlet syndrome: a review for the primary care provider
CONCLUSIONS: The most common form of TOS is neurogenic. The most common symptoms are pain and paresthesias of the head, neck, and upper extremities. Diagnosis of nTOS is clinical, and the best screening test is the ULTT. There is no conclusive evidence that any one treatment method is more effective for nTOS, given limitations in the published data. Surgical decompression remains the treatment of choice for vascular forms of TOS.PMID:36018621 | DOI:10.1515/jom-2021-0276

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in adults with chronic liver disease
CONCLUSIONS: We found that by using CEUS, as an add-on test following abdominal ultrasound, to diagnose hepatocellular carcinoma of any size and stage, 22% of people with hepatocellular carcinoma would be missed, and 6% of people without hepatocellular carcinoma would unnecessarily undergo further testing or inappropriate treatment. As to resectable hepatocellular carcinoma, we found that 23% of people with resectable hepatocellular carcinoma would incorrectly be unresected, while 8% of people without hepatocellular carcinoma would undergo further inappropriate testing or treatment. The uncertainty resulting from the high ...

Five Radiology Artificial Intelligence Companies That Somebody Should Build and Invest In
By HUGH HARVEY I’ve previously written comprehensively on where to invest in Radiology AI, and how to beat the hype curve precipice the field is entering. For those that haven’t read my previous blog, my one line summary is essentially this: “Choose companies with a narrow focus on clinically valid use cases with large data sets, who are engaged with regulations and haven’t over-hyped themselves …” The problem is… hardly any investment opportunities in Radiology AI like this actually exist, especially in the UK. I thought it’s about time I wrote down my ideas for what I’d actually build (i...

Temporary opening of the blood-brain barrier with the nitrone compound OKN-007
This study demonstrates that OKN-007 may be able to temporarily open up the BBB to augment the delivery of various compounds ranging in MW from as small as ~550 to as large as ~470 kDa. This compound is an investigational new drug for glioblastoma (GBM) therapy in clinical trials. The translational capability for human use to augment the delivery of non-BBB-permeable drugs is extremely high.PMID:34754607 | PMC:PMC8569329

Efficacy of regional anesthesia using ankle block in ankle and foot surgeries: a systematic review
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2022 Jan;26(2):471-484. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202201_27872.ABSTRACTAnkle blocks are commonly used as surgical anesthetics and for postoperative analgesia during foot surgeries. It is chiefly an infiltration block which utilizes a localized anesthetic approach for providing surgical anaesthesia for a variety of foot procedures. Thus, in this systematic review, we focus primarily on the use, effectiveness, success and failures of regional ankle blocks in outpatient surgeries and hereby compare them with other anesthetic techniques and agents commonly used. Literature search was carried out using Pub...

Ultrasonographic Imaging and Guided Intervention for the Superior Cluneal Nerve: A Narrative Pictorial Review
CONCLUSIONS: US imaging is helpful for guiding injections of SCN entrapment and related clinical conditions. The evidence of US imaging in diagnosing SCN disorders remains insufficient, which requires more prospective studies to validate.PMID:35793190

Prehospital ultrasound and cardiological emergencies
Ann Cardiol Angeiol (Paris). 2022 Oct 20:S0003-3928(22)00154-8. doi: 10.1016/j.ancard.2022.09.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTechnological advances over the past two decades have paved the way for the prehospital use of ultrasound. This practice was first developed in traumatology and then in a multitude of other indications, including cardiology. The development of pulmonary ultrasound is certainly the most visible illustration of this. Firstly, because it is an extra-cardiac examination that provides the answer to a cardiac question. Secondly because from a theoretical point of view this ultrasound indication was a b...

A meta-analysis of pregnancy outcomes in the diagnosis of isolated foetal renal parenchyma by prenatal ultrasonography
CONCLUSION: The indications for eugenic labour should not be included in a prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of patients with IHEK. In the results of this meta-analysis, the live birth and polycystic dysplasia rates were optimistic in terms of pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, under the condition of excluding other unfavourable factors, it is necessary to A thorough technical inspection is required to make an accurate judgment.PMID:36872810 | DOI:10.3233/THC-220690
