In conclusion, among Swedish middle-aged subjects, nearly two-thirds showed complete fatty degeneration of thymus on CT. Age-Related Dysfunction of Water Homeostasis https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/06/age-related-dysfunction-of-water-homeostasis/ Dehydration can be an issue in older people. As in every complex system in the body, the mechanisms by which hydration is regulated become dysfunctional with advancing age. Researchers here look at the brain region responsible for regulating some of the response to dehydration, cataloging altered gene expression in search of the more important mechani...

This study explored the association between different cooking fuel types and the risk of cancer and all-cause mortality among seniors constructing Cox regression models. Data were obtained by linking waves of 6, 7, and 8 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included a total of 7,269 participants who were 65 years old and over. Cooking fuels were categorized as either biomass, fossil, or clean fuels. And the effects of switching cooking fuels on death risk were also investigated using Cox regression models. The results indicate that, compared with the users of clean fuels, individuals using bio...

This study demonstrates just how vital the thymus is to maintaining adult health." « Back to Top Does Amyloid-β Aggregation Cause Broad Disruption of Proteostasis? https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/08/does-amyloid-%ce%b2-aggregation-cause-broad-disruption-of-proteostasis/ Researchers here speculate on the ability of insoluble amyloid-β aggregates to be broadly disruptive of the solubility of many other proteins, and thus disruptive to cell and tissue function. Is this important in aging? The evidence here shows the existence of the mechanism in a lower species, but that doesn't n...

A vision of immuno-oncology: the Siena think tank of the Italian network for tumor biotherapy (NIBIT) foundation
CONCLUSION: Novel immunotherapies are needed in cancer patients with resistance to or relapse after current immunotherapeutic drugs. Such new treatments may include targeted agents or monoclonal antibodies to overcome the immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment. The mode of combining the novel treatments, including vaccines, needs to be matched to the patient's immune status for achieving the maximum benefit. In this scenario, specific attention should be also paid nowadays to the immune intersection between COVID-19 and cancer.PMID:34301276 | DOI:10.1186/s13046-021-02023-4

HPV vaccine acceptance in West Africa: A systematic literature review
Vaccine. 2021 Aug 5:S0264-410X(21)00835-5. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.06.074. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHuman papillomavirus (HPV) infections are mostly sexually transmitted and cause the greatest share of infection-associated cancers. Each year more than half a million women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and the mortality rate in West Africa is over ten times higher than that of Northern Europe. HPV vaccines are highly effective at preventing various strains of the infection. However, vaccine hesitancy and access issues have led to low HPV vaccine acceptance in certain countries. A search strategy was developed ...

Interventions targeted at women to encourage the uptake of cervical screening
CONCLUSIONS: There is moderate-certainty evidence to support the use of invitation letters to increase the uptake of cervical screening. Low-certainty evidence showed lay health worker involvement amongst ethnic minority populations may increase screening coverage, and there was also support for educational interventions, but it is unclear what format is most effective. The majority of the studies were from developed countries and so the relevance of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is unclear. Overall, the low-certainty evidence that was identified makes it difficult to infer as to which interventions were best, ...

Corticosteroid Use in Otolaryngology: Current Considerations During the COVID-19 Era
CONCLUSIONS: Systemic corticosteroids (SCSs) reduce long-term morbidity in individuals with SSNHL and Bell's palsy, reduce acute laryngotracheal edema, and have benefit in perioperative management for some procedures. Topical or locally injected corticosteroids are preferable for most other otolaryngologic indications. SCSs have not shown long-term benefit for sinonasal disorders. SCSs are not a contraindication to vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that these vaccines are safe for immunocompromised patients.IMPLICATIONS F...

Global burden of oropharyngeal cancer attributable to human papillomavirus by anatomical subsite and geographic region
CONCLUSIONS: It is worth considering the inclusion of HPV immunization in males, especially in the regions where oropharyngeal cancer is highly prevalent.PMID:35303618 | DOI:10.1016/j.canep.2022.102140

Immune response to anti-SARS-CoV-2 prime-vaccination in patients with cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis provides compelling evidence of humoral and adaptive immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 in patients with cancer, which last for at least 2 months following complete prime-vaccination.PMID:35867203 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-022-04185-w

Cervical cancer prevention in countries with the highest HIV prevalence: a review of policies
CONCLUSION: Considerable progress has been made in policy development for CC prevention and control in sub Saharan Africa. However, in countries with a high HIV burden, there is need to tailor these policies to respond to the specific needs of WLHIV. Countries may consider updating policies using the recent WHO guidelines for CC prevention, while adapting them to context realities.PMID:35948944 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-022-13827-0
