Tranexamic acid for the reduction of bleeding during functional endoscopic sinus surgery
CONCLUSIONS: There is moderate-certainty evidence to support the beneficial value of topical or intravenous tranexamic acid during endoscopic sinus surgery with respect to surgical field bleeding score. Low- to moderate-certainty evidence suggests a slight decrease in total blood loss during surgery and duration of surgery. Whilst there is moderate-certainty evidence that tranexamic acid does not lead to more immediate significant adverse events compared to placebo, there is no evidence regarding the risk of serious adverse events more than 24 hours after surgery. There is low-certainty evidence that tranexamic acid may no...

Low-dose ketamine inhibits neuronal apoptosis and neuroinflammation in PC12 cells via α7nAChR mediated TLR4/MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Feb 24;117:109880. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.109880. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKetamine is commonly used for sedation, analgesia and anesthetics. Much evidence has shown that it has an immune-regulatory effect. The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway mediated by α7nAChR is a prominent target of anti-inflammatory therapy. However, whether ketamine suppresses inflammatory levels in nerve cells by activating α7nAChR remains unknown. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to establish the neuroinflammation model in PC12 cells in vitro, and α7nAChR siRNA was transfected into PC12 cells 30 min befo...

Predictors of Catheter-Related Bladder Discomfort After Surgery: A Literature Review
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that patients with predictors of CRBD should be closely monitored to reduce postoperative patient suffering, and their quality of life should be improved after anesthesia.PMID:37187710 | PMC:PMC10181350 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4873

Neuroprotective effect of dexmedetomidine pretreatment on sevoflurane-initiated neurotoxicity via the miR-204-5p/SOX4 axis
CONCLUSION: Dex pretreatment decreased miR-204-5p expression levels and upregulated SOX4 expression levels, palliating Sev-initiated neurotoxicity.PMID:37259215 | DOI:10.2174/0929866530666230530164913

Difficulties and challenges associated with literature searches in operating room management, complete with recommendations.
Abstract The purpose of this article is to teach operating room managers, financial analysts, and those with a limited knowledge of search engines, including PubMed, how to locate articles they need in the areas of operating room and anesthesia group management. Many physicians are unaware of current literature in their field and evidence-based practices. The most common source of information is colleagues. Many people making management decisions do not read published scientific articles. Databases such as PubMed are available to search for such articles. Other databases, such as citation indices and Google Schola...

Effectiveness and risks of cricoid pressure during rapid sequence induction for endotracheal intubation.
CONCLUSIONS: There is currently no information available from published RCTs on clinically relevant outcome measures with respect to the application of cricoid pressure during RSI in the context of endotracheal intubation. On the basis of the findings of non-RCT literature, however, cricoid pressure may not be necessary to undertake RSI safely, and therefore well-designed and conducted RCTs should nonetheless be encouraged to properly assess the safety and effectiveness of cricoid pressure. Videolaryngoscopy versus direct laryngoscopy for adult patients requiring tracheal intubation.
CONCLUSIONS: Videolaryngoscopes may reduce the number of failed intubations, particularly among patients presenting with a difficult airway. They improve the glottic view and may reduce laryngeal/airway trauma. Currently, no evidence indicates that use of a VLS reduces the number of intubation attempts or the incidence of hypoxia or respiratory complications, and no evidence indicates that use of a VLS affects time required for intubation. Associations of Anemia With Outcomes in Patients With Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Anemia on admission was associated with higher mortality and an increased risk of poor outcome in patients with ICH. However, the results were limited by the high heterogeneity of included studies. Prospective, multi-center or population-based, large sample cohort studies are needed in the future. Introduction Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second most common cause of stroke and a highly lethal disease (1), which still lacks effective therapeutic interventions (2, 3). Although age, baseline ICH volume and neurological status on admission are well-known predictors of outcome of ICH (4), none of t...
