Consolidation on Chest Radiograph is not as Predictive of Bacterial Pneumonia in Hospitalized Children as has been Thought
In a secondary analysis of 2212 children hospitalized in three children's hospitals with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) during participation in the national prospective EPIC study, 1795 children had detection of at least one typical or atypical bacterial, or viral pathogen. A single study radiologist at each institution re-read a random sample of the previously interpreted study radiographs and categorized findings according to 2005 WHO pediatric definitions. Investigators homed in on predictive value of radiographic consolidation for etiology of pneumonia among those with pathogen(s) detected and found only 12% positi...

Assessing Bone Mineral Density Using Radiographs of the Hand: A Multicenter Validation
Osteoporosis and fragility fractures incur substantial costs to quality of life and global health care systems. The current gold standard for quantifying bone density is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Our hypothesis is that bone density can be accurately predicted with a simpler method using plain radiographs of the hand.

Anterior Malreduction is Associated With Lag Screw Cutout After Internal Fixation of Intertrochanteric Fractures
CONCLUSION: In patients older than 65 years with intertrochanteric fractures, anterior malreduction on a lateral oblique view was associated with much greater odds of postoperative cutout than anatomic reduction or posterior malreduction. Because anterior malreduction is within the surgeon's control, our findings may help surgeons focus on intraoperative reduction on an oblique lateral view to prevent cutouts. Although this factor is a reliable indicator, the results should be applied to cephalomedullary nails, because there was only one patient with cutout among those with sliding hip screws. Because this study was conduc...

An analysis of cardiology consultation requests in infants presented to the pediatric emergency department of a tertiary children's hospital
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, congenital heart disease is usually diagnosed in the neonatal period, but some patients may be missed due to a variety of symptoms and findings. Infants with feeding problems and jaundice, especially those with cardiomegaly on chest radiographs, should be carefully evaluated for underlying serious congenital heart disease.PMID:37731167 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2023.2261356

Ollier Disease: A Case Report and Review of Treatment Options
In this report, we describe the case of an 11-year-old female who presented to her physician with pain and swelling of her right ring and small fingers after playing in a swimming pool with no obvious mechanism of trauma. A routine, plain radiographic evaluation of her hand revealed the presence of multiple enchondromatosis. We hope to use this case to highlight the surgical management options for young patients with Ollier disease and discuss circumstances in which surgical management may not be indicated.PMID:37731444 | PMC:PMC10509006 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.43815

Association between immunohistochemical markers and tumor progression following resection of spinal chordomas: a multicenter study
CONCLUSIONS: These IHC variables with tree-based machine learning tools successfully demonstrate a high capacity to identify a patient's tumor progression pattern with an accuracy of 66%. Pancytokeratin, EMA, cytokeratin A1/A3, and S100 protein were the IHC drivers of a low tumor progression. This shows the power of machine learning algorithms in analyzing and predicting outcomes of rare conditions in a small sample size.PMID:37728388 | DOI:10.3171/2023.6.SPINE23348

Economic burden of nonoperative treatment of adult spinal deformity
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with ASD undergoing operative treatment at baseline had greater sagittal deformity and greater improvement in health-related quality of life postoperatively compared to patients treated nonoperatively. Additionally, patients in the nonoperative cohort overall had an increase in ODI and did not show improvement in utility gained. Patients in the nonoperative cohort who had low disability and sagittal deformity underwent successful maintenance and cost-effective treatment.PMID:37728175 | DOI:10.3171/2023.7.SPINE23195

Prevalence of women with breast implants in Sweden: a study based on the population-based mammography screening programme
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of breast implants in Swedish women is estimated to be around 4%. The population-based mammography screening programme in countries with a publicly funded welfare-type healthcare system and a clear documentation of mammography screening attendance, seems to be a feasible way to establish the prevalence of breast implants in the population. The large number of women with breast implants warrants further studies regarding the best diagnostic and treatment alternatives for this group.
