Long-term complications according to silicone oil type. A single center cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: We propose SO extraction as the preferred treatment for ME during SO tamponade. SO extraction should be performed sooner in younger patients to avoid emulsification. In selected patients, we suggest a longer duration of the tamponade up to 11 months with a reasonable safety profile, regardless of the SO type.PMID:37671421 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231200034

Pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy: Updated scenario
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2023 Sep 5:11206721231199118. doi: 10.1177/11206721231199118. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy (PPCRA) is an uncommon form of chorioretinal atrophy characterized by perivenous aggregations of pigment clumps associated with peripapillary and radial zones of retinal pigment epithelial atrophy that are distributed along the retinal veins. Most patients are asymptomatic, and evidence suggest that PPCRA is slowly progressing. Unless macular involvement is present, the majority of patients usually retain a normal visual function. Our ability to diagnose PPCRA has recently...

Visual outcome of treating proliferative sickle cell retinopathy in 108 eyes
CONCLUSION: Several options effectively treat PSCR. Visual outcome improved or remained same in 90.7% of treated eyes. Randomized controlled trials will determine the optimum treatment for each distinct presentation of PSCR. Treatment guidelines and a disease classification system of prognostic value are unmet needs.PMID:37670511 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231199273

Clinical efficacy of sclerotonyxis for acute angle-closure glaucoma with persistent high intraocular pressure
CONCLUSIONS: Sclerotonyxis can rapidly lower IOP, release the pupillary blockage, reconstruct the anterior chamber, and reduce systemic complications caused by long-term high-dose antiglaucoma drugs. Thus, it normalizes the IOP and provides a safe operating space for stage II surgery, effectively reducing complications in patients in a persistent high IOP state.PMID:37667925 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202308_33400

Treatment discontinuation patterns of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor in retinal vein occlusion
CONCLUSION: Over 7.5 years, treatment was discontinued for three-quarters of RVOs. Stable disease was the most common reason for discontinuation, with nearly half (45%) of all RVOs in the cohort stable off active therapy. Better visual outcomes were achieved in BRVO than in CRVO, although both groups benefited from treatment.PMID:37669742 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2023.08.005

Evaluation of peripapillary choroidal vascularity index in young smokers
Conclusion: The study revealed no significant difference in CVI among young smokers who smoked less than 5 packs/year compared to non-smokers. However, there was a statistically significant decrease in the TI, TS, NI, and NS quadrants of the RNFL in early-age smokers.PMID:37667845 | DOI:10.1080/15569527.2023.2249096

Investigation of Altered Retinal Microvasculature in Female Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Detection
Conclusion: OCTA results suggest that RA patients present with a reduced macular retinal vascular density. These subtle alterations of ocular microcirculation may precede severe eye involvements and may be a potential biomarker for early distinguishing abnormal eyes from healthy eyes.PMID:37665319 | DOI:10.1042/BSR20230045

Leverage of nuclease-deficient CasX for preventing pathological angiogenesis
Mol Ther Nucleic Acids. 2023 Aug 6;33:738-748. doi: 10.1016/j.omtn.2023.08.001. eCollection 2023 Sep 12.ABSTRACTGene editing with a CRISPR/Cas system is a novel potential strategy for treating human diseases. Pharmacological inhibition of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) δ suppresses retinal angiogenesis in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy. Here we show that an innovative system of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated CRISPR/nuclease-deficient (d)CasX fused with the Krueppel-associated box (KRAB) domain is leveraged to block (81.2% ± 6.5%) in vitro expression of p110δ, the catalytic subunit of PI3Kδ, encode...

Nintedanib inhibits normal human vitreous-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in human retinal pigment epithelial cells
CONCLUSIONS: By elucidating the anti-EMT effects of nintedanib in HV-induced RPE cells, our study highlights the potential of this oral triple tyrosine kinase inhibitor in the treatment of PVR. These findings contribute to the growing body of research aimed at developing novel strategies to prevent and manage PVR, ultimately improving the success rates of retinal detachment repair.PMID:37659204 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115403

4D-DIA quantitative proteomics revealed the core mechanism of diabetic retinopathy after berberine treatment
CONCLUSION: The present findings confirmed the role of BBR in DR treatment and explained associated molecular network mechanism, in which, CA1 could be considered as a crucial candidate in the protection of RPEs with berberine treatment.PMID:37659689 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2023.175947
