Adsorption of methyl orange from aqueous solution with lignin-modified metal-organic frameworks: Selective adsorption and high adsorption capacity
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 18:129781. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129781. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe lignin-based metal-organic framework (UIO-g-NL) was prepared by a Schiff base reaction of aminated lignin and the zirconium cluster-based MOF (UIO-66-NH2) as an adsorbent of methyl orange (MO). The results showed that UIO-g-NL maintained the original crystal structure and aminated lignin was successfully introduced after functionalization. UIO-g-NL selectively adsorbed MO from a mixed solution 50 mg/L MO and 50 mg/L methylene blue (MB), with an adsorption efficiency of nearly 100%. In a mixed solution 250 mg/L MB a...

Insight into the effect of particulate organic matter on sludge granulation at the low organic load: Sludge characteristics, extracellular polymeric substances and microbial communities response
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 18:129791. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129791. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper investigated the effect of particulate organic matter (POM) on sludge granulation under low organic load. The results showed that POM promoted the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) fraction of 25%, and POM also enhanced the sludge settleability and biomass retention. However, when the COD fraction of POM increased to 50% and 75%, the AGS performance deteriorated. The analysis of extracellular polymeric substances revealed that the POM (accounted for ≤ 50% of COD...

Biomacromolecules. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c00554. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOrganic transformations mediated by visible light have gained popularity in recent years as they are green, renewable, inexpensive, and clean and yield excellent products. The present study describes cyclo-condensation of 2-methylthiazole-4-carbothioamide with differently substituted α-bromo-1,3-diketones achieved by utilizing a white light-emitting diode (LED) (9W) to accomplish the regioselective synthesis of novel 5-aroyl/hetaroyl-2',4-dimethyl-2,4'-bithiazole derivatives as DNA/bovine serum albumin (BSA)-targeting agents. Th...

Rapidly Synthesized Single-Ion Conductive Hydrogel Electrolyte for High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Zinc-ion Batteries
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 20:e202312020. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSingle-ion conductive electrolytes can largely eliminate electrode polarization, reduce the proportion of anion migration and inhibit side reactions in batteries. However, they usually suffer from insufficient ion conductivity due to the strong interaction between cations and cationic receptors. Here we report an ultrafast light-responsive covalent organic frameworks (COF) with sulfonic acid groups modification as the acrylamide polymerization initiator. Benefiting from the reduced electrostatic interaction between Zn...

Organic Polymer Dots Photocatalyze  CO2 Reduction in Aqueous Solution
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 20:e202312276. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312276. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDeveloping low-cost and efficient photocatalysts to convert CO2 into valuable fuels is desirable to realize a carbon-neutral society. In this work, we report that polymer dots (Pdots) of poly[(9,9'-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(1,4-benzo-thiadiazole)] (PFBT) without adding any extra co-catalyst can photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into CO in aqueous solution, rendering a CO production rate of 57 μmol g-1 h-1 with a detectable selectivity of up to 100%. 5 cycles of CO2 re-purging experiments show no distinct decline i...

Selective adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by isostructural hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks
Chem Commun (Camb). 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1039/d3cc03131d. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTwo isostructural hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with 1-D hexagonal-shaped pores were crystallised using the molecules biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid (BPTCA) and [1,1':4',1'']terphenyl- 3,3'',5,5''-tetracarboxylic acid (TPTCA). The desolvated HOFs, named BPTCA-2 and TPTCA-2, exhibited selective adsorption towards naphthalene and anthracene, respectively, during competitive adsorption experiments.PMID:37728438 | DOI:10.1039/d3cc03131d

Aza-Michael Addition in Explicit Solvent: A Relative Energy Gradient - Interacting Quantum Atoms Study
Chemphyschem. 2023 Sep 20:e202300529. doi: 10.1002/cphc.202300529. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAza-Michael additions are key reactions in organic synthesis. We investigate, from a theoretical and computational point of view, several examples ranging from weak to strong electrophiles in dimethylsulfoxide treated as explicit solvent. We use the REG-IQA method, which is a quantum topological energy decomposition (Interacting Quantum Atoms, IQA) coupled to a chemical-interpretation calculator (Relative Energy Gradient, REG). We focus on the rate-limiting addition step in order to unravel the different events taking place in ...

Effects of salinity on methane emissions and methanogenic archaeal communities in different habitat of saline-alkali wetlands
This study conducted simulation experiments of increased salinity to investigate the impact of salinity, habitat, and their interactions on CH4 emissions, as well as to examine the response of methanogenic archaea to salinity. Overall, salinity inhibited CH4 emissions. But there were different responses in the three habitat soils. Salinity decreased the relative abundance of methanogenic archaea and changed the community structure. In addition, salinity changed soil pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, which were significantly correlated with methanogenic archaea. Our study showed that ...

Biodegradability enhancement of waste lubricating oil regeneration wastewater using electrocoagulation pretreatment
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29841-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs a sustainable management of fossil fuel resources and ecological environment protection, recycling used lubricating oil has received widespread attention. However, large amounts of waste lubricating-oil regeneration wastewater (WLORW) are inevitably produced in the recycling process, and challenges are faced by traditional biological treatment of WLORW. Thus, this study investigated the effectiveness of electrocoagulation (EC) as pretreatment and its removal mechanism. The electrolysis parameters (current density, ini...
