Ultrasound-mediated multifunctional magnetic microbubbles for drug delivery of celastrol in VX2 liver transplant tumors
Drug Deliv Transl Res. 2023 Aug 28. doi: 10.1007/s13346-023-01421-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCelastrol (CST) has positive pharmacological effects on various cancers, but clinical application is limited because of poor water solubility and systemic toxicity. Ferric oxide (Fe3O4) has a large specific surface area and can be functionalized by inorganic modification to form complex magnetic drug delivery systems. Herein, Fe3O4 was surface-modified with citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) (via) the Mitsunobu reaction and then covalently bound to CST. Finally, magnetic microbubbles (MMBs) containing perfluoropropane ...

Gut-derived metabolites mediating cognitive development in 5-year-old children: early-life transplant in mice has lasting effects throughout adulthood
Brain Behav Immun. 2023 Aug 7:S0889-1591(23)00232-5. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2023.08.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe gut microbiota has been causally linked to cognitive development. We aimed to identify metabolites mediating its effect on cognitive development, and foods or nutrients related to most promising metabolites. Faeces from 5-year-old children (DORIAN-PISAC cohort, including 90 general population families with infants, 42/48 females/males, born in 2011-2014) were transplanted (FMT) into C57BL/6 germ-free mice. Children and recipient mice were stratified by cognitive phenotype, or based on protective metabolite...

Sono-enhanced heterogeneous Fenton catalysis: magnetic halloysite nanotube synthesis and accelerated free radical generation
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jul 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28623-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough heterogeneous Fenton catalysis has captured increasing attention compared to its homogeneous counterpart, it still confronts some inherent drawbacks in use, such as the dilemma in solid-liquid separation and greater mass transfer resistance. Driven by the acoustic cavitation effect, herein, a sono-enhanced heterogeneous Fenton catalysis process was built to overcome the above two shortcomings, by rapidly synthesizing magnetic Fenton-like catalysts and accelerating electron transfer during the catalytic reaction....

Stimuli-responsive ferroptosis for cancer therapy
Chem Soc Rev. 2023 May 23. doi: 10.1039/d3cs00001j. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerroptosis, an iron-dependent programmed cell death mechanism, is regulated by distinct molecular pathways of lipid peroxidation caused by intracellular iron supplementation and glutathione (GSH) synthesis inhibition. It has attracted a great deal of attention as a viable alternative to typical apoptosis-based cancer therapy that exhibits drug resistance. For efficient therapeutic utilization of such a unique and desirable mechanism, precise control using various stimuli to activate the administered nanocarriers is essential. Specific condit...

Ultrasound-assisted adsorption of chlorpyrifos from aqueous solutions using magnetic chitosan/graphene quantum dot ‑iron oxide nanocomposite hydrogel beads in batch adsorption column and fixed bed
In this study, chitosan-based hydrogel beads with different content of iron oxide-graphene quantum dots were synthesized and used for the ultrasonic-assisted removal of chlorpyrifos from wastewater. The results of batch adsorption experiments showed that among the hydrogel beads-based nanocomposites, the chitosan/graphene quantum dot‑iron oxide (10) indicated a higher adsorption efficiency of about 99.997 % at optimum conditions of the response surface method. Fitting the experimental equilibrium data to different models shows that the adsorption of chlorpyrifos is well described by the Jossens, Avrami, and double expone...

Magnetization of amorphous FeOOH chrysanthemum-like nanosheets under ambient conditions
Chem Commun (Camb). 2023 Apr 21. doi: 10.1039/d3cc00433c. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe conversion of paramagnetic solid iron oxides to magnetic iron oxides has drawn considerable interest, but it's still challenging to carry out without heat treatment or irradiation. In this work, solid amorphous iron oxide chrysanthemum-like nanosheets synthesized by a smart redox strategy at the interface of a soap-free emulsion are magnetized at room temperature and under ambient pressure. An amorphous FeOOH hollow shell with needles towards water is produced by the reaction of cumyl hydroperoxide (CHPO) and iron(II) sulfate (FeSO4...

Ultrasonic-assisted immersion of parboiled treatment improves head rice yield and nutrition of black rice and provides a softer texture of cooked black rice
In this study, we evaluated the effect of power, time and temperature of ultrasonic immersion on the HRY, texture profile and nutritional quality of PBR. Proper ultrasound-assisted immersion could increase the HRY by about 20% and the GABA content by up to 133%, as well as reduce the arsenic and cadmium content by up to 61% and 79% relative to untreated black rice (UBR), respectively. Moreover, it could increase the content of essential minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc to some extent, and free and bound polyphenols, despite of a certain loss of anthocyanins. It could also improve the palatability of cooked rice. Fur...
